The Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of cuts on Wednesday. The team released a veteran wide receiver and safety. Who are they and how does it impact the Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs cut wide receiver Mike Williams and safety Stevie Brown.

The move isn’t shocking but a bit surprising due to the timing of the players release. The third preseason game is coming up soon. The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field this Saturday at noon. I’m surprised that these two players didn’t get one last chance to impress the KC Chiefs coaching staff during the Bears game.

Mike Williams used to be a good NFL receiver. He played parts of four season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one season for the Buffalo Bills. His best season came in 2012, Williams racked up 996 yards on 63 receptions and nine touchdowns. He had 11 touchdowns as a rookie in 2010.

Unfortunately, Williams hasn’t seen live regular season game action since November 24, 2014. He didn’t receive a catch during the game either. The last time he caught a touchdown in a regular season NFL game came on September 28, 2014 in a game against the Houston Texans.

During the 2014 season, Williams totaled eight receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown. Those numbers frankly are terrible. The Buffalo Bills are a run first team but still he must have been pretty bad not to see much of any time at all. He started in nine games but only put up numbers in five (all of which weren’t good).

I think it was the right move for the KC Chiefs to let Williams walk. The man is 29-years-old and probably wouldn’t see much playing time with the Chiefs anyway. Now the Chiefs have an open roster spot to fill with some player hopefully with upside.

The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t done releasing guys after Williams however. The team also gave the pink slip to safety, Stevie Brown on Wednesday. Brown has played four seasons in the NFL. He’s played for the Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants.

His best season happened in the year 2012. He started 11 games for the Giants. He complied eight interceptions for 307 yards, two forced fumbles and 56 tackles for New York almost four seasons ago.

Brown tore his ACL the following summer on August 24, 2013, ending his 2013 season before it began. The injury may have played a major role in stunting his development as a defense back.

Brown started eight games and played in 16 for the Giants in 2014. Unfortunately, he couldn’t put up numbers anywhere near his 2012 season stats. He broke up one pass, got a sack and tackled 30 guys in all of the 2014 season with the Giants.

The Houston Texans and the New York Giants tried to give Brown another chance last season but he could not make either of the teams rosters. He didn’t play football in 2015. The Chiefs tried giving him a shot this season but ended up cutting the 29-year-old.

Overall, I think the Kansas City Chiefs made the wise decision to cut these players at this time. Without these guys on the roster, other guys will get more reps the next two preseason games. Live game action is vital in evaluating talent. The Chiefs understand that and knew it was time to say good-bye to Williams and Brown.
