KeiVarae Russell officially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.  The Chiefs signed him yesterday afternoon after a somewhat long wait.

The Chiefs used a third round pick on the former Notre Dame cornerback. Kansas City picked Russell 59th overall during this years NFL draft. The young man has a lot of talent, but unfortunately, Russell didn’t get much playing time due to a few issues he dealt with at school.

During his career at Notre Dame, Russell suffered academic and health issues. He went through an academic fraud investigation back in 2014. He was suspended for the whole 2014 season due to the investigation.

Notre Dame accepted Russell back to the team and he finished his senior season there. During his senior season disaster struck for the talented corner. He fractured his leg late in the season which sidelined the impact player for six to eight weeks ending his season.

He suffered the injury earlier in the season but kept it a secret so he could keep playing. He tried to play through the injury with some success. He totaled good numbers as a senior, racking up 125 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks,12 passes defended, five interceptions and two forced fumbles.

It’s almost time to see what he can do for the Chiefs. Take a look at this post he put on Twitter a few days ago. This is the kind of attitude I want every Chiefs players to have.

The Chiefs want Russell to succeed. Kansas City needs another corner outside of Marcus Peters. Russell just might be the guy. He will have to beat out other guys like Marcus Cooper, Steven Nelson, Phillip Gaines, and rookie D.J. White.

The Chiefs are looking for one of those guys to fill in for Sean Smith. Smith left the Chiefs to play for rival, Oakland Raiders, during free agency. Smith is from California so the move made since both on a financial level and an emotional level.

I think Russell will be the second corner for the Kansas City Chiefs sometime this season. His skill set may force him to play free safety to help Eric Berry at the back end of the defense.

With the signing of Russell, all nine drafted Kansas City Chiefs rookies are signed. Hopefully Russell and many more rookies can make an impact during training camp and make the team. Now the not so long wait until football season starts again this September.
