KC Chiefs News: ESPN Power Rankings

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on where ESPN has the Kansas City Chiefs ranked prior to the start of the 2016 NFL season.

ESPN came out with their post-draft power rankings a couple of days ago and the Chiefs are in pretty good shape. It’s not often the Chiefs have been in the upper third of the power rankings so it’s nice to at least have some expectations.

The Chiefs finished the season last year ranked eighth on the list of power rankings so they’ve slid a little bit. They haven’t fallen as far as the division rival Denver Broncos however. The Broncos have fallen to the eighth spot in the rankings while the Chiefs stand at tenth.

The Chiefs appear to be in solid position in a division that could really swing to anyone.

The Broncos lost Malik Jackson and Peyton Manning this off-season, but the core of their defense remains intact. The Chargers should run at least an NFL caliber team onto the field this season after they were decimated by injuries last year. Last but certainly not least, the Raiders have been improving steadily over the last couple of seasons and could actually make a move.

The Chiefs are going to have a tough time this season if they dig themselves into a 1-5 hole, but don’t look for that to happen.

Jeremy Maclin and Alex Smith now have a rapport after having played together for a full season. Smith and Travis Kelce are now entering their third season as a throw and catch duo. The return of Jamaal Charles isn’t going to hurt anything either.

The Chiefs are also hoping that Justin Houston can be a fast healer and be ready for the start of the season after his recent ACL surgery. He’ll be needed if the Chiefs are going to head to the playoffs for a second straight season.

The Chiefs have a few questions left unanswered but appear to be a pretty strong team from top to bottom. Their secondary may need some help, but they have a potential star in Marcus Peters. He’ll have to prove he can shutdown the over the top plays, but if he can stay steady on everything underneath they’ll be just fine.
