Today’s KC Chiefs news focuses on the Chiefs’ first pick in the 2016 NFL draft Chris Jones and his rookie contract.

The KC Chiefs got their first pick of the draft locked up and he was also the first one of their rookies to sign his deal.

Because they traded down and got their first pick in the second round of the draft, the Chiefs are going to save some money on who could turn out to be a very promising player.

In fact, if he lives up to the promise that ProFootballFocus.com thinks he has, then the Chiefs are going to get a steal on the second best defensive tackle in the class. They also had him slated as a top-ten overall player this season.

Jones will be in competition along the interior defensive line with Allen Bailey, Dontari Poe, and Jaye Howard which may not be a bad thing because he’s a developmental prospect anyways. Getting time to develop while spelling the three starters from time to time is the perfect buffer for a player like that.

The Chiefs newest addition is likely to take the spot of Mike DeVito who just recently retired from playing football. He was very good against the run and that’s something that Jones already has going for him.

ProFootballFocus has the following to say about his strengths and even compares him to Muhammad Wilkerson, who also just retired:

"• Elite strength. When he plays low, offensive linemen end up in the backfield• Elite length. Able to keep his body clean and control guards with one or two hands• Size and skilset to line up anywhere on the line and be effective• Plays through linemen to the running back as opposed to attacking running backs and getting washed out"

The KC Chiefs still have some work to do this off-season but getting their first pick signed was a big step in the right direction.

They’ll need to get the rest of their rookies signed to deals soon, but Chris Jones won’t have any issues revolving around his contract when he reports to Rookie camp this weekend. It appears the Chiefs didn’t just get a great player, but a good character guy also. What do you think fans? Are you ready for some football?
