Kansas City Chiefs Should Draft Wide Receiver Early

The talk of the 2016 NFL Draft for the Kansas City Chiefs surrounds them going after a defensive player. The Chiefs really should be looking to upgrade at the wide receiver position.

Jeremy Maclin joined the KC Chiefs last offseason and made all of the difference in the world for a team whose wide receivers struggled mightily in 2014. Those wide receivers were so bad that they were unable to record a touchdown all season long.

Maclin went on to score nine in his inaugural season as a Chief and had over 1,000 yards receiving. While Maclin is a terrific wide receiver for the Chiefs and in general, the wide receiver position is still one that needs to be addressed early on in the draft.

The problem is that now that Sean Smith has bolted for Oakland and Husain Abdullah has retired at the age of 30, the KC Chiefs might have no other choice but to target the secondary in the first round. They also just added Mike Williams to their roster, which could be their way of “addressing” the need.

Wide receiver should be high on that list of concerns though.

It’s nothing against Chris Conley or Albert Wilson, but Conley struggled with drops during his rookie season, and Wilson wouldn’t even be a fourth receiver on most other teams due to his size. The Chiefs saw what kind of production they can get from their offense with one good receiver, so now it’s time to add another in the form of the draft.

More from KC Kingdom

Peter King of MMQB actually predicted the Chiefs to select a wide receiver in his mock draft. He feels like Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell will slide all the way down to the Chiefs at pick 28, and that they’ll snatch him up.

"He could fall this far because of his 40 time (4.65 seconds), and because other positions are stocked so well. He’s the best big receiver in this draft, not quite physical and tall (at 6-2 and 221) on the level of Calvin Johnson, but he made a lot of plays at Ole Miss using his body and physicality to his benefit. He’d be a very good complement to Jeremy Maclin."

Call me crazy, but this would be a good pick. Sure, a lot of Chiefs fans are probably still scarred from the whole Jon Baldwin Experiment a few years back, but Treadwell could be a great addition to the Kansas City offense. Plus, this team tends to stray away from sexy picks in the early rounds.

It’s time to make that sexy pick, Kansas City. It’s time to give Alex Smith another lethal weapon to throw the football to, and to help get this team to a Super Bowl.
