KC Chiefs News: Mike DeVito Retires

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on the retirement of free agent defensive lineman Mike DeVito. The Chiefs are probably still in pretty good shape.

Another free agent defender who played for the Chiefs in 2015 has announced his retirement. Recently, they lost the opportunity to re-sign Husain Abdullah, who retired amid concerns about his numerous concussions. Now it is veteran defensive end Mike DeVito who spent the last three years in Kansas City helping plug up holes against the run.

It was believed that he had a mutual interest in returning to the Chiefs for another season, but at 31 years old he’s decided to hang up his cleats. While he didn’t cite concussions as part of the reason for his retirement, he did suffer two concussions in 2015.

While losing a quality player like DeVito is never a positive thing, the Chiefs should still be in good position even without him. He was above average against the run but often came out in obvious passing situations. The Chiefs may be able to get a quality defensive lineman in the draft with one of their later picks who can help fill that role.

With veterans Jaye Howard, Allen Bailey, and Dontari Poe as the primary pieces on the defensive line at this point, the Chiefs should be able to snag some cheap depth either through waiver claims or via the draft. While it would be nice to have DeVito back, the Chiefs are going to be just fine without him.

DeVito’s retirement is much less surprising than Abdullah’s. He is 31 years old, and while that’s not old for the position by any stretch, he’s certainly not on the right side of 30.

The Chiefs have had a busy off-season and already picked up some depth pieces but it couldn’t hurt for them to take a flyer on a player in the fourth or fifth round of this year’s draft. It would be great if they won the appeal and won back this year’s third-round pick. It would certainly give them even more flexibility.

So what do you think KC Chiefs’ fans? Were you hoping to get DeVito back for one more season? Will the Chiefs be alright without his services? Who would you like to see them target as a depth piece on the defensive line? Let me know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
