Kansas City Chiefs: Stop Freaking Out About Justin Houston

facebooktwitterreddit

Everything hit the fan earlier this week when it was announced that Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston could miss six to 12 months due to problems with his ACL.

I’ll start out by saying this: Relax, Chiefs Kingdom.

Yes, Justin Houston could miss time in 2016, but it’s not for sure. Here’s what we know as of now:

On Tuesday, word began to spread that Justin Houston had offseason surgery to fix his ACL. Dr. James Andrew found that the ACL was intact, but not functioning the way it should be. His ACL was not torn, but it wasn’t healthy enough for him to play on it.

The next part that freaked everyone out was word that Houston could miss anywhere between six months to a year, which spells out the possibility that Houston could miss all of the 2016 season. Obviously this is worrisome, but everyone needs to just take a deep breath and relax.

For one, it’s anywhere between six months to 12 months. If Houston, who is a professional athlete and likely has the best doctors money can buy, gets back in six months, that’s September, meaning he maybe misses a game or two. Let’s look at some of the other bad injury speculations the Chiefs have had recently:

More from Kansas City Chiefs

  • Last season, it was said that Dontari Poe would miss time due to having back surgery over the summer, and he was out on the field playing in the opening game. He went on to start all 16 games.
  • Most notably – Eric Berry, who left the team midway through the 2014 season to get treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Berry ended up being healthy enough to play during training camp and then went on to have one of the best seasons of his career.

Look, I get it, Chiefs fans. Houston is a dominate linebacker in the NFL, and the Kansas City Chiefs paid a lot of money for his services last offseason. That would make anybody anxious, but Houston seems to have confidence that he’ll come back bigger and stronger and ready to fight.

When it comes to professional sports, it’s tough to look at the positives sometimes. With this Houston injury, fans should try to steer clear of the negatives and focus on the good parts of this situation.

Houston seems confident he’ll be fine, and… Dare I say it… Worst case scenario, Houston does miss the entire season. He missed six games last year, and the Chiefs’ record was 6-0 without him.

Sure, no one is psyched about Dee Ford likely getting the starting job in Houston’s possible absence, but the Chiefs will make it work. It’s what good teams do.
