The Kansas City Chiefs have made efforts to improve their offensive line this offseason. Could they continue to do so in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft?

Alex Smith has had to run for his life a lot during his first three seasons as a member of the KC Chiefs. A lot of that is due in part to the struggles that the offensive line has had.

With the team acquiring Mitchell Schwartz in free agency, the two tackle spots are locked up, but should the Chiefs consider drafting an offensive tackle anyway? If so, Jason Spriggs out of Indiana is one of the best tackles in this draft class.

Spriggs was a four-year starter at Indiana, and has shown just how good he is at the left tackle spot.

Jason Spriggs held his own against some of the scary pass rushers in the Big Ten (Joey Bosa, anyone?) and was named All-Big Ten in 2015 by the coaches and media. He’s a huge force on the offensive line and looks to be a shoe-in at the left tackle spot for whatever team ends up drafting him.

While an effective blocker, Spriggs doesn’t have the best timing, which appears to be his biggest weakness per the analysts at CBS Sports.

Drafting Spriggs is probably an unlikely scenario for the Chiefs, mainly because he’s destined to be a starting left tackle in the NFL. The Chiefs selected Eric Fisher with the number one overall pick in 2013 to be just that for Kansas City, and he’s slowly but surely coming into his own.

If the KC Chiefs did select Spriggs, it’d mean that they don’t see a future with Fisher. I just don’t see that being the case, as Fisher really has gotten better and should be good to go at the left tackle spot this season.

Rob Rang at CBS Sports disagrees with me, however, and has the Chiefs selecting Jason Spriggs 28th overall.

"Eric Fisher has yet to live up to expectations after being selected No. 1 overall in 2013 and depth remains an issue all over Kansas City’s offensive line. Head coach Andy Reid, a former offensive line coach himself, could be intrigued by Spriggs, a former tight end whose athleticism stood out at the combine. Protecting the edges is key with Von Miller and Khalil Mack in the division."

I get the love for Jason Spriggs due to his athleticism. He had an incredible showing at the Combine and appears to be in tip top shape for the left tackle spot. The Chiefs, however, have a left tackle already and if they’re going to add to the offensive line, it needs to be a guard.
