Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on how the Chiefs should address filling the holes left by departing free agents.

All things considered, the Chiefs have done very well at retaining their impending departures this offseason. So far they’ve lost Sean Smith, Jeff Allen, Tyvon Branch, Donald Stephenson, and Chase Daniel. Of those free agents they’ve relinquished, Smith and Allen figure to be the two that leave the biggest gap to fill.

The Chiefs could still retain players like Mike DeVito and Husain Abdullah if they can work out a team friendly deal. They’ve also kept Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Jaye Howard, and Frank Zombo by working out deals. They’re keeping Eric Berry by way of the franchise tag, but will most certainly look for a way to get him on a long-term contract.

The team also not only replaced Stephenson but seemingly upgraded at the offensive tackle position by adding Mitchell Schwartz. Then over the weekend, the team brought in former Oakland wide receiver Rod Streater.

While it doesn’t look like much initially, he’s fast and has been a productive receiver in the past. He put up 888 yards receiving in 2013. That was with quarterbacks like

He put up 888 yards receiving in 2013. That was with quarterbacks like Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin, and Matt Flynn throwing him the football. Pairing him with Alex Smith and other weapons to draw coverage away from him could see him put up big numbers for the Chiefs. While he doesn’t look like a legitimate number two, he could surprise some people.

"Kansas City seemed to be preparing for Smith’s eventual departure. They drafted Phillip Gaines in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft and selected Marcus Peters with the 18th overall pick last year. Not to mention, they took Steven Nelson in the third round last year as well.Hopefully, Gaines is ready to fill Smith’s shoes, because this Chiefs secondary is losing a hell of a cornerback."

The Chiefs are going to have to address some needs. The secondary and offensive guard are two areas that could use some attention.

In the secondary, players like Leon Hall and Reggie Nelson are waiting for a team to give them a chance. Both are on the wrong side of 30, but neither of them is likely to command an unreasonable salary. With young players like Steven Nelson and Phillip Gaines on the roster, signed a veteran mentor wouldn’t be a terrible idea.

The Chiefs could also look to fill the hole left by the departure of Jeff Allen. One name at offensive guard that really seems to make sense is Geoff Schwartz. He’s played for the Chiefs before and is one of the people that endorsed the Chiefs to his brother, Mitchell Schwartz. Playing with his brother may be appealing and due to his age he’s not likely to demand a huge contract.

The Chiefs could also turn to the draft to fill some of these needs. They’re currently without a third-round pick but do have an extra pick in the fifth-round to try and make up for it. There are a number of ways the Chiefs could go, but with them retaining their key players and not having many holes to fill, the arrow seems to be pointing up.

So what do you think KC Chiefs’ fans? What direction should the Chiefs go in trying to fill some of their holes? What free agents would you like to see brought in? Are you happy with the moves that they’ve made so far? Let me know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
