KC Royals Memories: Chris Young World Series Game One

facebooktwitterreddit

In honor of throwback Thursday, why not take a look back at World Series 2015 game one. Chris Young played a huge role for the KC Royals in that game.

The KC Royals re-signed two of the heroes from game one of the 2015 World Series this off-season. Alex Gordon was the more notable of the two, but Chris Young was also inked to a two year deal that helped give him a little back pay for his efforts last season.

A year ago this week, March 7th to be exact, Chris Young was signed by the KC Royals on a one year Major League deal worth a whopping $675,000. It should be noted that when it was all said and done, he made more than that through bonuses and incentives.

The Royals’ big moment came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Alex Gordon strode to the plate. He was facing off against Mets’ closer, Juerys Famila, who hadn’t given up a run in the playoffs and hadn’t blown a save since July 30th. That’s when the unbelievable happened:

While Gordon and Hosmer were crowned heroes in that game, even though Hosmer came seriously close to playing Billy Buckner, Chris Young made just as important a contribution.

With the game in extra innings, Chris Young did what he had done all year for the Royals. He came into the game in the 12th inning and worked three hit-less frames of baseball. He would only allow one walk while striking out four batters.

One of his pitches had Daniel Murphy fooled so badly that it actually almost worked out in the Mets favor. When Murphy swung at a slider that bounced off the plate and rolled to the backstop he almost managed to make it to first base. It’s a good thing the Royals had a World Series MVP behind the dish to chase the ball down and complete the strikeout.

Young would go on to pitch effectively for the Royals again in game four of the World Series. He gave up two hits and a walk across four innings while allowing only two runs to score. One of those runs should be solely accredited to Alex Rios, who apparently forgot how many outs were needED to end an inning. His blunder allowed a run to score, but Royals’ rally magic saved the day again.

Chris Young was a key player for the Royals in 2015 and they’ll likely lean heavily on the big right hander again in 2016. His ability to deceive hitters into popping the ball up and somehow striking batters out with a sneaky slider will continue to impress the Royals and their fans. Here’s hoping for another year of big strikeout numbers in the postseason and good shoulder health.
