Today’s KC Royals news focuses on the unfortunate injury to Jarrod Dyson and what candidates might fill the right field spot.

The Royals get to find out what they’re made of right off the bat this year. Before the regular season begins they’ve got to find someone to fill in for an injured right fielder.

Jarrod Dyson is out for at least six weeks with a grade II strain of his right oblique. If there is any positive news in that, it’s that the Royals have a month until opening day. The injury also doesn’t affect Dyson’s legs which is his greatest asset anyways.

Dyson also has played the role of platoon player and bench player for six seasons. Not getting regular at-bats isn’t likely to derail his season all that much. Unlike Alex Rios last season, Dyson will likely get back up to speed fairly quickly.

The other good news is the Royals have a plethora of options to fill that position in his absence. Paulo Orlando seems the likely candidate for the job since he’s already played an effective role for the Royals in the past.

Travis Snider also has major league service time but has been underwhelming in Spring Training so far this year. Through two games he has three strikeouts and no hits across four at-bats.

"Brett Eibner may be the most likely to make the team as a fifth outfielder. He’s been a Royals’ prospect for a few years now, but really broke out in 2015. He’s got power, speed, and plays a solid defense in the outfield. If he has a camp as strong as his last one, he may be hard to keep out of the starting lineup."

Brett Eibner and Jose Martinez will likely make a strong push for that right field spot. With Dyson sidelined for at least the first couple weeks of the regular season, they have plenty of time to reach out and grab that starting spot.

The Royals could also turn to free agency to fill the void left by Jarrod Dyson. That seems pretty unlikely with the in-house candidates they already have and the amount of time Dyson is slated to miss. Crazier things have happened however.

This is very unfortunate for Jarrod Dyson. He’s paid his dues over the course of the last six seasons and has stayed motivated and team oriented throughout all of his part-time duties.

It’s never good to see someone go down due to injury, but it’s especially troublesome when it’s someone who’s shown so much perseverance.
