KC Chiefs News: Eric Berry and NFL Free Agency

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs news fixates on the team placing the franchise tag on safety Eric Berry on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a big decision on Tuesday when they decided to place the non-exclusive franchise tag on Eric Berry. This will answer some questions for the Chiefs when it comes to free agency, as it likely means the team is going to part ways with cornerback Sean Smith.

Berry being tagged is a great thing for Chiefs fans. He’s the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense, and has one of the best stories in all of football.

The sad news in all of this is that it does likely mean that Smith is on his way out. Smith is going to be expensive in free agency, and I just don’t see the Chiefs having the type of money to retain him. Other teams like the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers are going to do whatever they can to get Smith on their team.

With Smith likely out the door, perhaps the Chiefs will try to keep guys like Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson, both of who are going to be free agents as well. These are two old school guys in Kansas City, and fans would love to see one (if not both) of them come back.

Next big deadline for Eric Berry and Chiefs is 4 months away [Joel Thorman, Arrowhead Pride]

"The Chiefs have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal with Berry. If they don’t strike a deal by then, Berry must play out the 2016 on his one-year $10.8 million tender. Berry has not signed the tender yet (as far as I know)."

It really isn’t a shock that the Kansas City Chiefs decided to apply the franchise tag on Berry. He’s the epitome of the Chiefs organization and he really is a staple in the defense.
