The Kansas City Chiefs might be losing a few key players to free agency. Should they target a defensive player like Reggie Ragland in the 2016 NFL Draft?

Last month, KC Kingdom did a “Way Too Early Mock Draft” and in the first round, the KC Chiefs decided to add to their terrifying defense. They do so with an inside linebacker by the name of Reggie Ragland.

Ragland, a senior out of Alabama, is considered to be the best inside linebacker available in this year’s draft. He’s also considered to be a top 20 prospect. He was voted as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015, which looks nice next to being a National Champion.

The reason why I picked Ragland for the Chiefs in that first mock draft was because of the pending departure of one Derrick Johnson.

Now, yes, as of now, it looks likely that DJ will be returning to Chiefs Kingdom in 2016, but the guy is going to have to retire eventually, and when he does, it’d sure be nice to have the second coming of him already on the roster.

Reggie Ragland could be that guy.

Draft him early this year, let him sit behind Derrick Johnson and Josh Mauga and learn the ropes, then when Johnson’s time is up, you have a great inside linebacker ready to take charge.

Ragland only had three missed tackles in 2015, which decreased from ten in 2014. This shows that he’s constantly improving and takes direction well.

Some of the knocks on Ragland are that he can’t guard slot receivers well and he tends to be a bit overaggressive at times. He also has been questioned on his “play speed”.

None of the analysts on CBS Sports have Ragland falling past the 17th pick. Dane Brugler and Pete Prisco both have him going 17th overall to the Atlanta Falcons while Rob Rang sees him going inside the top 15, at 11 overall, to the Chicago Bears.

While it’s doubtful that Ragland will fall to the Kansas City Chiefs at pick 28, one can dream, right? He’s the type of guy that could really shine in Kansas City’s defense and could be the potential replacement for Derrick Johnson, when he does decide to call it a career.
