When the KU basketball team faced the Oklahoma Sooners earlier in the season, it was maybe the best game in all of college basketball. What will the re-match be like?

The Kansas Jayhawks needed three overtimes to beat the Oklahoma Sooners last month, in one of the most exciting games of the season. The game, in which the Jayhawks won 109-106, was so good that the king of hyperbole, Dick Vitale, made the claim on air at the time it was one of the best games he had witnesses.

Vitale mentioned again during the telecast of the game between the Jayhawks and West Virginia that the KU versus OU game was the best he’s seen in his 37 years of broadcasting. That is high praise indeed.

How do those teams follow up on that? Well, don’t expect another triple overtime affair. Those are rare, but you don’t need extra time to make a game exciting. Both teams are tied with West Virginia for first place in the Big 12. The winner will, at least, maintain a share of first place. This late in the season that will be huge!

This one is a big one, folks!

In the Jayhawks triple overtime win, Kansas held Buddy Hield to 46 points. Frank Mason trotted after the Sooners’ star shooter but even against a good defense, Hield was fantastic throughout the game.

Against Kentucky, Bill Self showed a triangle-and-two defense to contain the Wildcats’ guards. If Kansas has trouble keeping up with the Sooners back court, maybe Self will run this defense at Oklahoma as well.

The best bet is for Mason, Wayne Selden, Jr, and Devonte’ Graham to deny Hield the ball as much as possible and to never leave the accurate, quick-triggered shooter unattended.

This Kanas basketball team has played better of late, winning four in a row. Unfortunately, only one of those games was on the road, and the Jayhawks have yet to beat a quality team away from Allen Fieldhouse.

Perry Ellis has scored an average of 21 points a game over the last three outings, hitting 26 of his 34 field goal attempts (76.5 percent). The Jayhawks will need a similar performance from their senior to have much of a chance.

In conference play, Kansas has suffered a nine-point loss at West Virginia, a 19-point setback at Oklahoma State and Iowa State beat them by 13 in Ames. The Jayhawks will need to be more poised if they want to pull the upset against the Sooners.

The KU basketball team will need another fantastic performance from Landen Lucas, like his nine-point, 16-rebound night against the Mountaineers, and will need everyone else to be focused and on point if they want a chance to sweep the Sooners.

If they lose, it will be a tough haul to overtake Oklahoma since Kansas still has road trips to Texas, Baylor, and Kansas State on the slate, as well as home matchups against the Cyclones and Cowboys, both of which have already beaten the Jayhawks this season.

Rock Chalk, Jayhawks! GO KU!
