Heading into the 2016 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs have several different directions they could decide to go in regarding their first round pick. One of those areas is at safety, and they could address it by selecting Jalen Ramsey.

The KC Chiefs hold the 28th overall pick in this year’s draft, but it’s completely up in the air when it comes to what position they’ll address with that pick. The Chiefs have a lot of free agents hitting the market this offseason, most of them being on defense, and they won’t be able to keep everyone.

The Chiefs have two safeties hitting free agency – Husain Abdullah and Eric Berry – and it’s very possible that both guys could leave. More than likely (and this is completely my opinion), Berry will stay or at least be franchise tagged.

Even with Berry and Ron Parker as the starting safeties next season, the Chiefs need to try and add a possible backup. They could do that with Jalen Ramsey out of Florida State.

Ramsey is considered the best safety in the draft and the third best prospect overall this year. While it’s not likely that he’ll slip to the 28th pick, safeties aren’t as much hot commodities in the first round. Most teams like to go after quarterbacks or offensive linemen.

Ramsey, a junior, had 181 tackles, 22 defended passes, five sacks, four forced fumbles (two which he recovered), and three interceptions during his three year career at Florida State. While safeties typically aren’t early round picks for some teams, but Dane Brugler of CBS Sports thinks that Ramsey could potentially be the most talented player in the draft this year.

The teams that need help in the secondary who are picking in the top five are the Titans, Chargers, and Jaguars, so Ramsey more than likely won’t make it out of the top five.

The Chiefs probably will not draft up to get Ramsey, as they’ll hopefully have signed Eric Berry to an extension or at least franchise tagged him by this point. If they choose to pick up a safety in this draft, they could still choose to do so with Darian Thompson or Vonn Bell, whom they have been linked with in past mock drafts.

This is a fun year for Kansas City because of all of the different directions they can go in with this pick. There’s no clear need for the team, and it’s almost like they can draft at any position, and fans would be content.

Next: Who do the Chiefs take in the latest mock draft?

Jalen Ramsey has a high ceiling as a football player. While the Chiefs more than likely won’t be the team calling his name unless they trade up for him or he plummets, he should provide whichever team that drafts him with solid play in the secondary.
