The KU basketball team must get by the West Virginia Mountaineers if they hope to win their twelfth consecutive Big 12 Conference title.

The Kansas Jayhawks  must defend their home court Tuesday night against the West Virginia Mountaineers, in a clash that will play an important role in what school wins the Big 12 this season.

West Virginia leads the Big 12 with an 8-2 conference record. Kansas is in third, a game behind. The Mountaineers wreaked the Jayhawks earlier in the season, in a game that wasn’t as close as the nine-point difference at the end.

Last season, the Mountaineers played the Jayhawks to the buzzer in Allen Fieldhouse, so don’t expect less in this match-up.

In the first match-up at West Virginia, the Mountaineers shredded the Jayhawks with their guard play and pressure defense. Kansas committed 22 turnovers, and West Virginia logged 12 steals.

Frank Mason III and Wayne Selden, Jr combined for 13 turnovers in that game. The guards must handle the pressure with much more poise this time around if they hope to win this game.

West Virginia’s defense also created havoc for the Jayhawks when it came time to shoot the ball. Kansas hit just 33.3 percent of their attempts in the first go-around. Only three of their 12 three-point shots dropped in during that dismal performance.

Improved guard play and aggressiveness on the boards must be points of emphasis for the Jayhawks against West Virginia. Kansas cannot afford to be outhustled on their own court by a team as good and as scrappy as the Mountaineers.

On another note, which some may not see as positive, Dick Vitale will be doing his second game at Allen Fieldhouse. Love him or hate him, the man has done so much for college basketball, and he loves the Phog.

Kansas cannot fall two games behind West Virginia this late in the season and hope to overcome that deficit, especially with their remaining schedule. They need to play stronger and more consistently than they have of late. There have been some signs they may be coming out of their funk. If so, hang on!

Phog Allen Fieldhouse should be a rockin’ Tuesday night as this is a tremendously huge game in the Big 12. If the KU basketball team can’t over come the Mountaineers, their streak is all but over. If they can defend the home court, they will be in a position to make a run over the last few weeks.

Rock Chalk, Jayhawks!
