The KC Chiefs are in the offseason and one of the biggest aspects to the offseason is the NFL Draft. Todd McShay recently released his second mock draft of the season, and has the Chiefs going with a safety in round one.

Kansas City Chiefs fans might not be happy with Todd McShay’s most recent mock draft. McShay linked the Chiefs with Ohio State safety Vonn Bell in round one of the 2016 NFL Draft. McShay had this to say about the selection,

"With nine career interceptions, Bell displays great instincts and range in coverage. He’s an aggressive and tough run defender who had remarkable durability, playing in all 42 Ohio State games since 2013. This is an NFL-ready safety who could start for the Chiefs in Week 1."

While the Chiefs could use a boost to their secondary, taking a safety in the first round seems to be an indicator of the team possibly moving on from Eric Berry. Berry, who came back from cancer this past season, is a fan favorite in Kansas City, and it would be very sad if the team opted to part ways with him.

Fortunately, this is just a mock draft, and there have been talks since this mock draft was posted that Berry and the Chiefs have discussed a contract extension. With that said, let’s take a look at what Vonn Bell could offer should he be donning a Chiefs uniform next season.

According to CBS Sports, here are some of Bell’s strengths:

  • Matches up well with receivers
  • Plays with toughness
  • Good footwork
  • Reliable ball skills and timing

Some of his weaknesses include not making plays after intercepting the ball (although intercepting the ball is good enough) and he injured his MCL in the 2014 season.

Adam Teicher of ESPN says the selection of Bell is a decent one now, but might not be beneficial for the Chiefs down the road. He says that they won’t be in need of a safety by the time the draft arrives and that they rarely draft for need in the first round. The Chiefs have drafted players in the first round who can have a mentor in their rookie season.

"None of this is to say Bell wouldn’t be of interest to the Chiefs, or that they wouldn’t take him with their first-round pick. The Chiefs are picking lower, at 28, than they have since Dorsey arrived. They will have a smaller pool of players to choose from, so they can’t be as picky in what they’re looking for."

Since John Dorsey arrived to Kansas City in 2013, the Chiefs have selected two defensive players in the first round to just one offensive player. The point being that Dorsey likes building up a young defense, and that trend could very well continue in this year’s draft.
