The KC Chiefs are at the beginning stages of their offseason, and one of the first things to come in the offseason is free agency. Could the Chiefs be going against the norm and adding Johnny Manziel to their roster?

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t a team known for adding big names to their roster. Sure, they got Jeremy Maclin last year, but for the most part, players usually take their talents to the top dogs in the league.

One name that was linked to Kansas City via Randy Gurzi at FanSided.com, however, was Johnny Manziel.

Manziel, a former first round pick out of Texas A&M in 2014, has only been in the league for two years, but has not done himself any favors. It’s no secret that the Cleveland Browns (the team who drafted Manziel) have had a difficult time maintaining a solid quarterback, but it looks like the Johnny Football era is over there before it really began.

With Manziel likely moving on, Gurzi listed the KC Chiefs as one of the possible teams out there that could help the former Heisman Trophy winner clean up his act. Gurzi’s reasonings for this are mainly due to head coach Andy Reid‘s ability to help troubled players turn things around.

"In 2009 while with the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid took a chance on an explosive player recently released from prison in Michael Vick despite having Donovan McNabb at the helm."

While that part is eerily similar to this situation, I just don’t see the Chiefs signing a guy like Manziel. Since being drafted by the Browns only two years ago, he’s:

  • Checked into rehab
  • Got into it with someone at a golf tournament
  • Been pulled over after fighting with his girlfriend
  • Been caught on video partying (and then demoted to third strong quarterback)
  • Went to a casino on a weekend during the final week of the season.
  • Got into another altercation with his girlfriend that involved the police

… and that’s only the stuff that occurred with him during his time in the NFL. I didn’t even cover the controversy that surrounded him while he was still in college (Check out all of the drama with this post from Ryan Bort of News Week).

This is just a situation that Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs need to stay away from.

Yeah, Johnny is fun to watch. Chiefs fans got to experience that this past season when he started for Cleveland in week 16, but this isn’t worth the hassle. Kansas City still has Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray on the roster as far as quarterbacks go, and bringing in Manziel would bring in a lot of unnecessary media drama to the team.

The Chiefs simply don’t need that.

"On the field, Reid has always gotten the most out of his players, especially at the quarterback position. If Manziel would listen to him, both on-and-off the field, he could turn his career around and win the hearts of the Kansas City faithful in the process. – Gurzi via the article linked above"

Next to the fact that he’s a trouble maker, Manziel brings unwanted media attention wherever he goes. The Chiefs are a team that aren’t used to that, so why bring that upon yourselves?

Plus, everyone knows that as soon as Alex Smith were to struggle with anything, fans would immediately be pushing for Manziel to be thrown into a game. That’s season ending suicide right there. The Chiefs are fine with Smith at quarterback, so let’s keep it that way and not make things complicated.
