The KU basketball team will be in the national spotlight this weekend as they clash with the Kentucky Wildcats at Allen Fieldhouse.

Number two all-time in wins against number one all-time. That’s what is going down this weekend when the Kansas Jayhawks host the Kentucky Wildcats as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

The Jayhawks will get a break, sort of, from the grind of Big 12 Conference play, where they have struggled. Kansas has dropped three out of their last five games and has not looked good doing it.

Kansas is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference, and things are not looking great for them to continue their amazing streak of 11 consecutive conference championships.

Maybe seeing a non-conference opponent will help. Unfortunately, it is an opponent against whom the Kansas Jayhawks have rarely fared well. KU is just 6-22 against Kentucky, and according to BigBlueHistory.net, the Wildcats won 16 of their first 17 meetings. Since then, KU is still only 5-6 in head-to-head matchups.

Kansas Jayhawks Team Leaders

This game is certainly a clash of titans. Kentucky has 2,194 wins, and Kansas has 2,169. If their head-to-head record was reversed, and Kansas was 22-6, then the Jayhawks would be the all-time leader in college basketball in wins.

That is how close these teams are historically. Kentucky has dominated this matchup and therefore, has the most wins all-time.

This KU basketball team has to get clicking again. Since their terrific win against the Oklahoma Sooners on January 4th, the Jayhawks have scuffled. Through that game, Kansas was averaging 88 points an outing. Since then, a paltry 69 points a game.

The Jayhawks have lacked defensive intensity, haven’t moved the ball well on offense and seem to get out hustled of late. These are not the traits of a Bill Self-coached basketball team.

Perry Ellis has scored more than 20 points in four of the last seven ball games, but he hasn’t shot particularly well. He is shooting only 47.3 percent (52 for 110) during that stretch.

Frank Mason III is also a normally steady player who is struggling. In his last seven games, he is shooting just 33.3 percent (27-81) from the field. Mason also has two recent games in which he turned the ball over six and seven times. He has no other games all season with more than four turnovers.

A good showing and a strong win Saturday against a talented Kentucky team may go a long way toward getting the Kansas Jayhawks back on track. They need to turn this around quickly if they hope to win the Big 12 this season.
