The KU basketball recruiting efforts are ratcheting up as the Jayhawks have only landed one prospect for next year. Deshawn Corprew may now be on Bill Self’s radar.

Deshawn Corprew has been drawing interest from some elite programs as of late, and the Kansas Jayhawks seem to be in good position to land the 6’5 small forward. According to 247 Sports, he is a 4-star ranked 116 nationally.

The former Arkansas-Little Rock commit has been weighing his options with offers from many schools including Kansas, Missouri, NC State, Florida State, and Louisville. Originally from Hampton, Virginia, he transferred to Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina recently. In ESPN’s new rankings he just cracked the top 100 giving him 98th on the list.

Corprew can bring many attributes to the table with his physical play and versatility to drive in and shoot the three. After de-committing from Arkansas-Little Rock, he has gained the attention from big time programs and keeps rising in the rankings. Although he has not visited anywhere, that could change.

ESPN offered this scouting report on Corprew:

"Corprew is a prototypical wing-type with a chiseled frame and he’s a terrific athlete. He is tough to stop off the dribble and utilizes his strong frame, length, and athleticism to finish through contact as well as over it."

He could help the Jayhawks out in various ways. At 6’5″ he can play both small forward and shooting guard giving him the ability to play high and low. At close to 200 pounds, he can use his strength to drive in the lane and punish defenders.

He resembles Wayne Selden, maybe just not as strong but with some work that could come. If he were to come to Kansas, he would learn so much from the coaching staff and not to mention soon to be upperclassmen in Frank Mason and Devonte’ Graham.

There’s a possibility he could be a four-year player as well which makes him that much more of a steak for the JKansas ayhawks.

According to 247 Sports, coach Self and coach Townsend have scouted him and the Jayhawks have an 83% of landing him in their Crystal Ball predictions, as the other 17% is in the air.

With players starting to commit soon, expect a commitment sooner rather than later possibly.

Selden has the choice to leave for the NBA Draft after this season which opens a spot at small forward that number one recruit Josh Jackson could take. Commitments from Corprew and Jackson would add that depth at the three position that KU does not have this year.

Overall, Corprew has the chance to play for a prestigious program that could develop him into a star.

For Self, it’s not new to sign guys who originally were committed to a smaller school like Graham originally to Appalachian State and Mason to Towson. Although he is not well known, once he develops, Deshawn Corprew could be a big name player.
