KC Chiefs: Turning The 2015 Season Around

facebooktwitterreddit

It was only a month ago when the KC Chiefs were sitting at 1-4 and were on the cusp of going 1-5. Things seemed bleak.

Fast forward to late November and the Kansas City Chiefs are now back at .500 with a 5-5 record. They’ve won four straight games after their abysmal 1-5 start and are right back in the thick of things when it comes to the AFC playoff race.

In fact, if the season ended today, the KC Chiefs would own the sixth spot in the playoffs due to the Bills losing to New England on Monday night.

A large part of why this team has sustained success recently is due to their dominant defense and the magic of Dustin Colquitt and the rest of the Chiefs special teams unit. Colquitt almost always gives the opposing team lousy field position, which makes it a cake walk for the defense to force a three and out.

The offense hasn’t been terrific, but they’ve been finding their identity as of lately. They put 33 points up against the Chargers and 29 against the Broncos the week prior. Alex Smith hasn’t had to be the hero because the KC defense has done their part in keeping the opponent out of the end zone.

It’s been nice to see the Chiefs turn their season around and become relevant again and their playoff hopes are very much alive heading into a week 12 match-up against the Buffalo Bills. I can’t stress enough how important this match-up is for the Chiefs. The winner will hold the sixth spot in the playoffs and will own the tiebreaker should both teams have the same record after week 17.

If you had asked me a month ago what I thought of the Chiefs, I would probably tell you that the season was over and to go watch some Kansas City Royals postseason baseball. I was being quite the Debbie Downer, but I feel like I had the right to be.

This Chiefs team blew a two possession lead against the Broncos, got blown out in two consecutive games, and then went on to blow another two possession lead against the Bears. It wasn’t a fun stretch of games for my hometown football team, and I was tired of watching a dumpster fire week in and week out.

Fortunately, this team is finally coming together. The defense is back to what we all knew they were capable of being, and the offense is doing enough to win games.

Smith hasn’t thrown an interception since week three against the Green Bay Packers, which took place on September 28th. That will have been two months by the time the game against the Bills rolls around.

The point being that Smith has played mistake free football and has not cost the Chiefs any games. Sure, it’s frustrating at times that he doesn’t throw the ball deep and usually checks the ball down to the nearest guy, but he did make some nice throws during the game against the Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs still have yet to post a winning record since after week one when they beat the Texans, but they could very well get to that point this weekend when they host the Bills.
