KC Chiefs: What Does Tyler Bray Extension Mean For Chiefs

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs surprised most of their fan base when they gave quarterback Tyler Bray a two-year contract extension on Thursday.

Tyler Bray hasn’t appeared in a regular season game for the Kansas City Chiefs, and only suited up for a regular season game once. The Chiefs obviously like the kid though, and see potential in him, as he was given a contract extension worth $1.925 million.

Bray played his college football at the University of Tennessee where he played for three years. Bray forewent his senior year to enter the 2013 NFL Draft, and went undrafted. Bray’s main issue coming out of college was his immaturity, and that very well could have affected his draft stock (Link courtesy of Jon Cooper of Saturday Down South).

  • It’d be difficult to imagine Bray going undrafted had he stayed in school for another year (assuming he matured during that span), but he made the leap early, and ended up signing with the Chiefs after not getting selected in the draft.

His first season in Kansas City saw him as the third string quarterback behind Alex Smith and Chase Daniel. He didn’t dress for a regular season game until the final week of the season when Daniel started in San Diego.

Bray spent all of last season on the injured reserve after suffering an ACL tear suffered in January 2014, and to be quite honest… I didn’t see him making it past this preseason. It seemed evident that Aaron Murray was the third string in Kansas City and that Bray would go bye bye.

    Not the case though.

So what does this sudden contract extension mean for the Chiefs and their future quarterback situation?

It appears that this would be the final nail in the coffin for Chase Daniel being in Kansas past this season. With Bray being given an extension and Daniel’s contract being up after this season, it’s likely that Bray and Murray will be duking it out next summer for the number two spot quarterback spot on the team.

KC Chiefs fans haven’t seen much from Tyler Bray since he came to Kansas City in 2013. He has a rocket for an arm and is the perfect build for an NFL quarterback, but the opportunities just haven’t been there for him to get onto the field in the regular season.

Again, this appears to be writing on the wall that this will be Chase Daniel’s last season with the KC Chiefs, but you never know. It seemed evident when Terrelle Pryor was signed that Daniel would be on his way out, but lo and behold, he’s still here.

It’s worth noting that the extension does not include any guaranteed money, but it’s still a telling sign of what’s to come for the quarterback position after 2015.
