KC Chiefs: Should Chiefs Consider Trading Chase Daniel

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs very well might have the best backup quarterback in the league in Chase Daniel. Should they consider taking advantage of that?

Chase Daniel has turned heads this preseason as the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. He didn’t play in the most recent preseason game against the Titans, but in his first two games he went 25 of 33 for 271 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions.

Daniel has looked great so far in the preseason, and some fans are even going as far as to say that he should be the starter in Kansas City, according to Pete Grathoff of The Kansas City Star. While I wouldn’t go that far, NFL teams are constantly jumping at the chance to acquire any hot quarterback. Should the Chiefs consider trading Chase Daniel?

While an impressive showing in the preseason, Daniel, in my opinion, isn’t anything more than a career backup. He’s on the shorter side for a quarterback (and yes I know that both Drew Brees and Russell Wilson are short too) and has only started two games in his entire career.

Daniel did happen to look pretty good in those two starts, but again. Just two starts.

Teams often give up too much to get their hands on a quarterback who’s had good showings in minimal starts. Some examples of these guys are Matt Flynn, Kevin Kolb, Josh McCown, and one Chiefs fans are all too familiar with, Matt Cassel. I’m sure if you asked fans of these teams on their acquisitions of these guys, they’d tell you it was a mistake.

Now Chiefs fans are on the other side of it for this situation. Trading Chase Daniel could benefit the KC Chiefs, but it’s doubtful that a team will give up something better than a fifth round pick for a career backup. You never know though.

The Washington Redskins are a mess right now with their quarterback situation, and they could decide to target someone like Daniel. The Redskins also gave up a lot to draft Robert Griffin III, so they have experience in that department too (obviously a first rounder would be a no-brainer, but that ain’t happening Chiefs fans).

  • It’s obvious that Daniel likes it here. He played college football locally for the Missouri Tigers, and now he’s been reunited with former teammate Jeremy Maclin. It’ll be his third year with the Chiefs, but possibly his last, as his contract is up after this season, and Daniel will likely draw interest from other teams during the off season.

Personally, I’m okay with the Chiefs trading Chase Daniel if the reward is nice. I’d take a fourth or even fifth round pick, or if the team is willing to give up a player the Chiefs could utilize, that’d be nice too.

Here’s what John McCarty of Arrowhead Addict had to say about what he’d take in exchange for Daniel,

"First off, we have to establish he’s not worth a big draft pick. If a team wanted or needed a starting quarterback or someone to compete for a starting quarterback, again, Daniel would already have been dealt. More likely, the discussion goes back to another point I made earlier, what do the Chiefs (in this case, you the reader) value Daniel at? Would you trade Daniel for a sixth-round pick? Maybe Kansas City can combine Daniel with a late pick, such as its seventh-rounder, and try to land a fifth or maybe a fourth-round pick? That’s the value."

As for how it effects the team, obviously the Chiefs would lose a solid and experienced backup quarterback. Aaron Murray looked decent with the first team guys in his recent preseason appearance, but is he ready to be the backup guy for this squad?

It should be an interesting next few weeks for the Kansas City Chiefs and Chase Daniel.

What do you think Chiefs Kingdom? Should the KC Chiefs look into trading Chase Daniel?
