KC Chiefs News: Camp Opens, Roster Breakdown And Fantasy Outlook

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs opened training camp this week, the first organized activites since OTA’s.

The KC Chiefs reported to training camp this week in St. Joseph, Missouri. The team’s first practice open to the public is today at 3:30 p.m. CST at Western State University. It’s a three-week grind for the Chiefs, who will work long, hot hours at camp until the second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, August 21st.

It’s been a mixed bag for Chiefs news in the past couple days.

Safety Eric Berry returned to practice after his hard-to-believe lymphoma diagnosis just eight months ago. (Source: ESPN.com) It’s not so much that Chiefs just got back one its best football players, it’s incredible that Berry, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, went through chemotherapy and is apparently ready to return to football at its most demanding level.

On the flip side, Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe underwent back surgery and will miss Chiefs camp. (Source: KCChiefs.com) He aggravated his already-tweaked back while working out this offseason, and it’s not clear when he’ll return. The Chiefs seem optimistic that he could be ready towards the beginning of the regular season. That means plenty of reps for Mike DeVito, Mike Catapano, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and the rest of the bigs to earn themselves a job on the team.

The Chiefs will get a first look at rookies Marcus Peters, Steven Nelson, Chris Conley and Ramik Wilson, among others. They’ll also get a first look at wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

KC Chiefs Considered Super Bowl Sleepers [Leigh Oleszczak- KC Kingdom]

"The Chiefs became a better team as soon as Maclin signed, and he will easily help out Smith on the field. Charles is one of the best running backs in the league, and Travis Kelce is a young and rising star in the tight end position."

Chiefs Rookie of the Year: Predicting the Winner [Josh Calhoon – Arrowhead Addict]

"There’s a handful of rookies that have a legitimate shot at the award this year. The guys that have the best shot are Marcus Peters, Chris Conley, Steve Nelson, James O’Shaughnessy, and Ramik Wilson. Obviously Peters is the heavy favorite in this group. Mitch Morse could have an outside shot, but there is a lot of competition at offensive guard and he might have to wait until next season to make an impact."

Madden 16: Three KC Chiefs Top Five At Their Position [Alec Tilson – KC Kingdom]

"Tops for the Chiefs is outside linebacker Justin Houston with an overall rating of 97. He’s tied for the highest at his position with Denver Broncos’ pass-rush phenom Von Miller."

A Dream Come True For Undrafted Rookie LaVance Taylor [KCChiefs.com]

"The newest Kansas City Chiefs running back, undrafted free agent LaVance Taylor, made headlines this week for first tweeting a highlight video at the Chiefs, then getting signed by them."

The Two Sides to Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis [MNchiefsfan- Arrowhead Pride]

"Davis is a fascinating case study. On one hand, he really IS capable of making explosive plays that almost no other running backs in the league are able to pull off (we’ll get back to the word “making” in that sentence shortly). On the other hand, he gets tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage more often than nearly any other running back I’ve ever seen."

Eric Berry Kept Working Out, Gained Weight During Chemo [Josh Alper – Pro Football Talk]

"On Wednesday, Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said that Berry opted to have IVs during each chemotherapy session so that he could continue to work out while receiving treatment and that he emerged from his final round in May weighing a pound more than when he went into the grueling process."

Justin Houston Will Repay Kansas City Chiefs’ Faith as Perennial All-Pro [Cian Fahey – Bleacher Report]

"He should continue to repay the Chiefs’ faith with All-Pro displays on a regular basis over the course of his new contract. Sometimes, production on the defensive side can be based on favorable matchups or support from teammates. That’s not the case with Houston."
