KC Chiefs: Justin Houston Contract Talks Progressing [Update]

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs have reached an agreement with their star, pass-rushing linebacker Justin Houston.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Since this article was published (literally seconds before the news broke), Justin Houston has signed a six-year deal worth $102 million.)

Here is the updated info, via ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Enjoy Leigh’s take on the negotiations posted seconds before the deal was announced.

The KC Chiefs have been hard at work trying to get outside linebacker Justin Houston signed to a long-term contract. The Chiefs have until 3:00 central time on Wednesday to get some sort of deal done. If not, talks will be tabled until the next offseason.

If Houston and the Chiefs don’t come to some sort of agreement, the former Georgia Bulldog can choose to sit out until week 10 if he decides not to sign the tender he was given in March.

The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need Justin Houston’s leadership and skills on the football field. Without him, the linebacker corps look a little less intimidating. Sure Tamba Hali is still the man, but we have no idea what Dee Ford is capable of, aside from running away from opposing running backs.

Last night, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network tweeted that there was optimism for the Chiefs regarding Houston’s contract situation.

The fact that the KC Chiefs have been working since yesterday to get some sort of deal done shows how much Kansas City wants Justin Houston to stay in town, and why shouldn’t they? Houston broke the franchise sack record last season and came half a sack shy of breaking the all-time NFL sack record. He’s a beast on the field, and the Chiefs need to lock him up while they still can.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports tweeted that things very well could come down to the wire for the two sides.

Again, Justin Houston and the Kansas City Chiefs both must agree to a long-term deal by 3:00 central time, or it could be awhile before the Chiefs see their defensive star out on the field again.

Matt Verderame of Arrowhead Addict points out that it’s obvious the two sides are working towards a deal they can both benefit from.

"The good news, and most important news, is that the two sides are clearly motivated to get this deal done. Rapoport was on NFL Network last night and said his sources tell him the Chiefs re willing to go above $14.5 million per year on a long-term deal. If nothing else, that shows Houston he is wanted and is a great starting point."

Let’s remain calm for the time being Chiefs Kingdom. I expect Justin Houston to be a member of the KC Chiefs for many years to come. (Editor’s Note: Now we can celebrate).
