KC Chiefs News: Offensive Line and NFL Top 100

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs news as of lately consists of the offensive line competition in OTAs and about two of the Kansas City Chiefs’ players making the latest installment of the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players countdown.

The KC Chiefs started OTAs on Tuesday, and one of the lingering questions so far this off season has been, “What will happen to that dreaded offensive line from last year?”

More from Kansas City Chiefs

It’s no secret that the Chiefs had one of the worst offensive lines in the league last year. Alex Smith was spending a lot of the time on the ground, and it was frustrating to watch. Fortunately though, John Dorsey has made some promising moves so far this off season. For starters, he acquired Ben Grubbs from the New Orleans Saints, which will boost the left side, and hopefully help out Eric Fisher in the process.

Dorsey also signed Paul Fanaika from the Arizona Cardinals. While Fanaika may not be a starter, he’s an experienced guard, who can be plugged into the line should a starter go down with an injury or whatever the case may be.

Aside from OTAs, the Kansas City Chiefs had two players revealed on Wednesday night’s announcement of players 70-61 on the NFL Top 100 countdown: Tamba Hali at number 70 and Jeremy Maclin at number 61.

Hali has been with the Chiefs for nine seasons, and many thought that drafting Dee Ford last year with their first round pick meant Hali would be departing Kansas City in the near future. Hali, however, restructured his contract to stay with the KC Chiefs. How cool is that?

Maclin, on the other hand, hasn’t played a regular season game in a Chiefs uniform yet. He just signed with Kansas City in March, and should be able to score some touchdowns in 2015, something no Chiefs wide receiver did last season.

Eric Fisher works with second team, per report [Arrowhead Addict]

"All that said, it would be stunning if Fisher is healthy and not starting. Kansas City made a huge investment in Fisher when he was made the first-overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. The team won’t abandon him after two seasons, especially when progress has been made throughout that time. Reid spoke after the session, and said he actually feels good about what he has seen from the Central Michigan product."

"The offensive line should be much better in 2015, which will be a huge relief. Last year it was frustrating watching Alex Smith get pummeled on every other play, so hopefully an improved line and a (slightly) improved receiving corp will help Smith lead the Kansas City Chiefs to greatness this season."

KC Chiefs: Tamba Hali and Jeremy Maclin Make NFL Top 100 [KC Kingdom]

"Last year, Tamba Hali was ranked 43rd on the countdown, and honestly, fans probably would have said him making this year’s countdown wasn’t a given. Hali dropped 27 spots, but is still easily one of the best linebackers in the National Football League. As for Jeremy Maclin, he didn’t make an appearance on last year’s countdown. In case you forgot, Maclin missed all of 2013 due to an ACL tear, but bounced back in 2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles."

  • "The best thing I can say about Tamba Hali is that there is literally no one else in the NFL I would rather have ahead of a young rookie like Dee Ford. There is no better teacher in the NFL when it comes to the technical aspects of the game than Tamba. Not only is he great at the technical part of the game but very few players exert as much effort as Tamba."

"And it began Tuesday on the first day of organized team activities (OTAs) with Eric Fisher at left tackle, Grubbs at left guard, third-year pro Eric Kush was at center, Jeff Allen at right guard and Donald Stephenson at right tackle."

"The Chiefs have a lot of possible combinations as they attempt to rebuild their line, but whatever they do, they’re likely to have a lot of starters who didn’t play for them last season. The only 2014 starter certain to be a fixture in their lineup this year is left tackle Eric Fisher. Otherwise, the Chiefs could open with a line that includes Ben Grubbs at left guard, Eric Kush at center, Paul Fanaika at right guard and Donald Stephenson at right tackle."
