Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Nelson Agholor

The Kansas City Chiefs have more than enough picks in the 2015 NFL Draft and should be able to compile a lot of young talent this year. If the Chiefs decide to draft a wide receiver early on, Nelson Agholor would be a terrific option for the second round.

Nelson Agholor played at the University of Southern California (USC to most) and was there for three seasons. During that time, the young wide receiver caught 178 passes for 2,572 yards and 20 touchdowns. Agholor’s breakout season was in 2014 (his junior year) where he had over 1,000 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

“Right off the bat, his draft value has a ceiling because he’s a slot receiver. At least that is how I see it. I don’t think he has the speed to get open outside. He’s a good value in the middle rounds, though, because of his return=game potential.” — NFC South scout, NFL.com

Adding Jeremy Maclin opened up the opportunity for the Kansas City Chiefs to draft maybe a player for the secondary or a right tackle for the offensive line in the first round. This means the second round should be all about grabbing one of the stellar receivers in this year’s draft class.

The Chiefs are covered with the punt returning duties for the most part (ahem De’Anthony Thomas) and Knile Davis did a nice job at kick returns last year, so Agholor would primarily be used as a slot receiver for Alex Smith.

A lot of analysts knock Agholor for the whole slot receiver thing, but he’d be a great fit for Kansas City. Zierlein noted that Agholor is the type of receiver who will “get open for a scrambling quarterback”, which happened a lot to Smith last year due to the atrocious offensive line (if you even want to call it that). Nelson Agholor, in other words, would be Smith’s go to guy when he’s getting run down by opposing defenses because he’ll get open and make some sort of play.

Sure, he’s not necessarily first round talent, but that’s okay. The Kansas City Chiefs may not draft a receiver in the first round due to other needs, and if they don’t, Agholor should still be on the board by the second round.
