Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Brandon Scherff

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs hold the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. While a lot of the focus has been on getting another wide receiver to match up with Jeremy Maclin, the Chiefs should also be considering selecting an offensive lineman in the first round. If so, Brandon Scherff is the best available in that department.

Brandon Scherff played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and is projected as the best offensive tackle entering the draft, according to CBS Sports. While Scherff is listed as an offensive tackle, he has experience playing guard. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com even states that Scherff might be better off at the guard position when he gets to the pros.

"Like former Hawkeye Riley Reiff, Scherff has measurables and traits to play tackle in the league but might be better suited to play guard. More powerful than explosive, Scherff is not a scheme-specific talent and can maul or move in run game. Road-grader with pancake-man potential, but has holes in his pass protection that will be exposed on the next level — especially at tackle."

Looking at Kansas City’s current offensive line, there is definitely room for improvement. John Dorsey did, however, go out in free agency and make some moves. He traded a fifth round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints for guard Ben Grubbs (a two time Pro Bowler) and also signed former Arizona Cardinal Paul Fanaika, another guard.

These two guys will likely be starters for the Chiefs in the 2015 season, but if Brandon Scherff fell to the 18th pick, I would be screaming at my TV to draft this kid because he’s more than likely an immediate starter for whatever team scoops him up.

Now I know there is a very slim chance that Scherff will fall all the way to the Chiefs, but you never know. In Mel Kiper’s most recent mock draft, he actually had Scherff going 13th overall to the New Orleans Saints. This isn’t super shocking considering the Saints just traded Grubbs to the Chiefs and need someone to protect Drew Brees.

"He’s one of the more dominant run-blocking linemen we’ve seen in the draft in the past few years, and he brings experience and the ability to take on the job like a professional right away."

While it’s a bummer that the Kansas City Chiefs probably won’t be able to land Brandon Scherff, fans at least can relax a bit knowing that the offensive line in 2015 will not be as horrendous as it was in 2014.
