KC Chiefs Receive A Disappointing Free Agency Grade

facebooktwitterreddit

John Dorsey and the KC Chiefs have been mostly praised for all the moves they have made during the 2015 NFL free agency period, but not everybody thinks they have improved as a team.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports gave out a free agency report card grade to every team in the NFL, and he wasn’t very kind to the KC Chiefs.

"They did a nice job with their two most-expensive moves in signing receiver Jeremy Maclin from the Eagles and re-signing safety Ron Parker, a rising player. Maclin will give them speed outside and it allowed them to release Dwayne Bowe. Parker and former Raiders player Tyvon Branch will be the safeties if Eric Berry doesn’t come back this season from his battle with lymphoma. They also traded to get guard Ben Grubbs from the Saints and then gave him a new deal. He struggled last season, but he is an upgrade. They also put the franchise tag on Justin Houston.Grade: C+"

Prisco wasn’t very clear on what the KC Chiefs did wrong or what they could have done better, and for the most part he supported all the moves they made.

The Chiefs were able to upgrade the wide receiver position by releasing Dwayne Bowe and signing Jeremy Maclin. As good as Bowe has been for the Chiefs, getting Maclin is a significant upgrade. Maclin is younger and faster than Bowe, and he will be a better fit in Andy Reids system.

Keeping Ron Parker was a great move by the Chiefs as he played admirably when he was called upon. He is a consistent safety and someone the Chiefs will be comfortable with as long as he is not asked to play cornerback.

The KC Chiefs also brought in former Oakland Raiders safety Tyvon Branch. Having a three headed monster at safety of Branch, Parker, and Husain Abdullah gives the Chiefs consistent safety play during Eric Berry‘s absence. Best case scenario is Berry comes back and plays at a high level again and the Chiefs have better depth at safety than they have had in decades. Remember Sabby Piscitelli?

Giving up a fifth round pick for guard Ben Grubbs may have been their best move of the off-season so far. Piscitelli was easily the worst player on the 2011 KC Chiefs team the same way that Mike McGlynn was the worst player on the team in 2014. McGlynn was by far the worst offensive lineman on a bad offensive line. With the addition of Grubbs, Chiefs fans won’t have to watch McGlynn get pushed into the backfield while Alex Smith runs for his life all season.

The two moves that you could criticize the KC Chiefs for are franchise tagging linebacker Justin Houston instead of working out a long term deal with him, and letting their best offensive lineman, center Rodney Hudson walk away and sign with the AFC West division rival Oakland Raiders.

2013 sixth round pick Eric Kush is currently in position to take over Hudson’s role as the starting center for the KC Chiefs but with all the draft picks the Chiefs will have this year don’t be surprised if they draft a center to bring in competition.

Overall the KC Chiefs have had a successful start to the free agency period and they have really put themselves in position to draft the best player available as I demonstrated in my mock draft. I think any grade below a B for the Chiefs is a little harsh.
