KC Chiefs: Could Stefen Wisniewski Replace Rodney Hudson

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2015 NFL free agency season is nearly upon us, and the KC Chiefs are going to have to make some moves if they look to improve on their 2014 season and make a playoff run in 2015. One way to do that is to make tough decisions that may not be popular.

Rodney Hudson was the most popular guy (and for good reason) on the KC Chiefs offensive line in 2014. Hudson was surrounded by mediocre at best offensive line play and was still able to shine and be a solid wall directly in front of quarterback Alex Smith.

So the question is, would the KC Chiefs let their best offensive lineman by far walk off into the sunset into free agency and join another team. The answer is, that is a very likely scenario.

One of the teams that is thought to be pursuing Hudson if he hits free agency is the KC Chiefs AFC West division rival Oakland Raiders. The Raiders were terrible in 2014, and 2013, and 2012, and 2011, etc… However their center was one of the strengths of the team.

Stefen Wisniewski was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He was named as the starting left guard in his rookie season next to Samson Satele who was starting at Center.

Following the 2011 season Satele joined the Indianapolis Colts and Wisniewski was handed the starting job at center for the Raiders. He never relinquished his starting spot and was a rock there for the Raiders through 2014.

Now Wisniewski’s time in black and silver could be coming to an end. According to Bill Williamson of ESPN, Wisniewski is expected to test the free agent market when it opens on Tuesday. Wisniewski and the Raiders have been in contact about a possible deal but the Raiders are expected to let him pursue other options.

The Raiders back up plan could be Hudson according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

"Chiefs center Rodney Hudson will outpace some projections. He came this close to signing a four-year extension during the season that would have been worth $6M a season — very good money. I bet he ends up with at least $7M a year in free agency, however, and I continue to hear the Raiders are looking hard at him."

So the KC Chiefs and the Raiders could essentially swap centers through free agency if the Chiefs do pursue Wisniewski and the Raiders pursue Hudson.

I am rarely a big fan of bringing in former Raider’s players, mostly because they are usually not very good, but Wisniewski is one of the very rare exceptions. If the Chiefs can sign Wisniewski for a decent amount less than they could Hudson than I am all for the deal.

Watch for the KC Chiefs to continue making moves to free up some cap room so they can be players in the free agency period that begins on Tuesday, March 10th at 4 PM ET.
