KC Royals: Lorenzo Cain Ranked as 9th Best Centerfielder

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2014 season was an exciting one for the KC Royals, and one of the most exciting players to watch was centerfielder (also sometimes right fielder) Lorenzo Cain. Cain was recently considered the ninth best centerfield in the MLB by MLB Network’s Shredder (also from Brewer Nation).

Cain had an incredible season in 2014, making unbelievable play after unbelievable during the postseason. There was even a quote about Cain that went something like, “Two thirds of the world are covered by water, the other third is covered by Lorenzo Cain.”

Lorenzo Cain was one of the most fun players to watch during the postseason and he has quickly become a fan favorite as a result. His jersey is currently the best selling jersey of all Kansas City Royals players too. Cain was always reliable to make a big play during the postseason and it got to the point where if he DIDN’T make a play, people were shocked (Source of link: David Hill of Kings of Kauffman).

  • Cain also hit .301 with five home runs during the 2014 season and started 133 games, which was a career high for him. October was good to Lorenzo Cain, as he batted .333/.388/.417 and batted in eight runs. He has become a fan favorite for Kansas City Royals fans, and hopefully he can pick up where he left off when the 2015 season begins in a few months.

Cain was robbed of a Gold Glove in 2014, but a lot of it might have had to do with him usually switching to right field to relieve Nori Aoki in the late innings, and therefore not having enough innings to be considered. Still though, Cain had a terrific season and it didn’t go unnoticed.

Cain was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 2004 amateur draft and stayed in Milwaukee until before the 2011 season. Cain, Alcides Escobar, Jeremy Jeffress, and Jake Odorizzi were sent to Kansas City for Zack Greinke and Yuniesky Betancourt. Cain saw significant playing time in both 2012 and 2013, but it’s safe to say that 2014 was his breakout year for sure.

Here was the entire top 10:

    1. Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates)
    2. Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels)
    3. Yasiel Puig (Los Angeles Dodgers)
    4. Carlos Gomez (Milwaukee Brewers)
    5. Adam Jones (Baltimore Orioles)
    6. Jacoby Ellsbury (New York Yankees)
    7. Adam Eaton (Chicago White Sox)
    8. A.J. Pollock (Arizona Diamondbacks)
    9. Lorenzo Cain (Kansas City Royals)
    10. Denard Span (Washington Nationals)

Luckily the KC Royals signed Cain to a new contract, keeping him in Kansas City for at least one more year and avoiding arbitration.
