Kansas City Chiefs Finish 14th On NFL Power Rankings

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs posted back to back winning seasons for the first time since 2005-2006, back when Trent Green was under center for the Chiefs. This time around though, it’s Andy Reid and Alex Smith leading the team and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Elliot Harrison of NFL.com released his final power rankings of the 2014 season and put the Chiefs in the better half of teams, at 14th overall.

"Boy, this team would be pretty good if it had a wide receiver … [ cough] or two or three [ cough]. Hopefully the draft will be kind to Alex Smith, providing him with someone who can both catch the ball and bring said ball with him into the end zone. Of course, most talk in Kansas City these days centers on whether or not the organization will pay Justin Houston. Let’s face it: He’s going to command a huge salary, fresh off a 22-sack season. The guess here is the Chiefs will retain him, because if that doesn’t happen, no way K.C. ranks this high."

Harrison raises valid points.

Yes, Kansas City needs to address the wide receiver issue and that will more than likely be the focus in both free agency and in the draft. Getting a good free agent like Randall Cobb or Jeremy Maclin would be awesome for the Chiefs, as would getting a solid receiver in the first round who can help the team for several years.

Justin Houston was Harrison’s next point and it’s hard to argue against what he said. Houston is the most important player on the team (well, Jamaal Charles might have him beat there) and it’s extremely important for John Dorsey to get the man paid so that he’s a happy camper headed into the 2015 season.

Overall though, I don’t think many Kansas City Chiefs fans had a good feeling about this season after the embarrassing week one loss to Tennessee and later falling to 0-2. This season certainly had its ups and downs, but I honestly would call it a success.

Sure, the Chiefs didn’t make it into the postseason, but they posted another winning season here in Kansas City and they did all of that without a lot of key players. Derrick Johnson, Mike DeVito, Jeff Allen, and Eric Berry all sustained injuries throughout the season and other players stepped up and helped the Chiefs win games.

As for the rest of the rankings, obviously the New England Patriots ended in first with the Seattle Seahawks in second place (the Chiefs beat both of them in case anyone forgot). Surprisingly, the Denver Broncos finished in 10th, as Harrison questioned whether the team will have Peyton Manning back in 2015. The San Diego Chargers finished one spot behind Kansas City at 15th and the Oakland Raiders finished in dead last.

Hopefully 2015 will be the year that the Kansas City Chiefs get over that hump and can win a playoff game.
