Sporting KC announced on Tuesday that they have signed 26 year-old Midfielder Servando Carrasco. Carrasco may be most famous for being the newly married husband of United States Women’s Soccer star Alex Morgan, but he will be determined to make an impact with Sporting KC.

Sporting KC acquired the rights to Carrasco in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft when the Houston Dynamo traded his rights for Sporting KC’s second round selection.

"“I’m really excited to become a part of this organization and I can’t wait to get started,” Carrasco said. “Having played against Kansas City over the years, two things instantly come to mind. One is the incredible support from the fan base and second is the style of play. It’s no secret that this is a team that wants to dictate the tempo of the game and it’s exciting to have the opportunity to learn the system and continue to grow as a player.”– Courtesy of Kurt Austin of SportingKC.com"

Carrasco was drafted in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by the Seattle Sounders. He made 12 appearances and seven starts for the Sounders in his 2011 rookie season, but was unable to register a goal or assist. In 2012 Carrasco saw even less play time, making only nine appearances, with two starts, and once again no goals or assists.

In 2013 Carrasco finally saw the field a decent amount, making 19 appearances, with 13 starts, and found the first goal and assist of his career. The Sounders traded him to the Houston Dynamo midway through the 2013 season and he only made three appearances and no starts in the last half of the season for the Dynamo.

Carrasco was able to find a few opportunities to make an impact for the Dynamo in 2014, with 16 appearances, and nine starts, but was once again unable to notch a goal or assist.

The signing is very much a depth signing as opposed to starting caliber. Carrasco is most comfortable in a defensive midfield position, and with Sporting KC losing Lawrence Olum in the offseason the only defensive midfielder they currently have on the roster is Jorge Claros who is still relatively unproven.

Sporting KC’s preseason training has already started, and their first preseason game is January 31st against the Portland Timbers. Sporting KC begin their 2014 MLS campaign on March 8th at Sporting Park against the New York Red Bulls.
