Dontari Poe has been a force in the trenches for the Chiefs since he was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. It is a relief to have a defensive lineman drafted by the Chiefs live up to his hype and potential after Chiefs fans had to watch LSU lineman Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson struggle their entire career with the Chiefs.

Poe’s rookie year showed that he was a promising young player but there were some growing pains that were evident. Poe finished 2012 with no sacks, 28 tackles, ten assists, and four pass deflections. Poe came out of the gate strong in 2013 and he attributes that to his new and improved diet.

"“I eat a lot of eggs in the morning, eat a lot of protein, grilled chicken, grilled fish, stuff like that,” Poe said, via Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star. “I’m trying to cut out the beef and the pork and stay away from the fried foods. And stay away from the barbecue.”– Courtesy of Josh Alper of NBC Sports"

A man giving up barbecue in Kansas City is a big deal, and it paid off for Poe as he notched 4.5 sacks, 43 tackles, nine assists, and four pass deflections in 15 games en-route to his first Pro Bowl. BJ Kissel of BleacherReport.com had a great write up of Poe’s improvements early in the 2013 season.

The success Poe had in 2013 clearly did not go to his head, as he continued the momentum into the 2014 season wrecking havoc among offensive line’s everywhere. He finished his second consecutive Pro Bowl season with a career high six sacks, 38 tackles, 8 assists, and one pass deflection.

The Chiefs defense is in good hands with Poe, Houston, and Hali who have all made the last two Pro Bowls, and continue to be a terror for opposing quarterbacks. The trio had 34 sacks in 2014, which improved on their total of 26.5 sacks in 2013.

Chiefs fans can cheer on their favorite players at the Pro Bowl Sunday at 8:30 PM on ESPN. Poe, Houston, Hali, and Charles were all drafted by Team Carter so their is only one team to cheer for.
