Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners are having a bit of an up-and-down season thus far. Early on, Oklahoma was beaten by Creighton, then they have lost to ranked teams like Washington and Wisconsin in non-conference play. They started out the Big 12 season with wins over ranked Texas and Baylor.

They then lost a couple in a row to Kansas State and West Virginia. The Sooners bounced back with a big win in the Bedlam series on Saturday, crushing Oklahoma State by 17.

The Sooners certainly have some stat sheet fillers.

These five players see the bulk of the action for Oklahoma. Thomas is the only one who averages less than 30 minutes an outing, and he is at 28.1 minutes. No one else gets more than 14 minutes a game.

The Kansas Jayhawks, on the other hand, are still an enigma. They little resemble a typical hard-nosed Bill Self coached team. Fans are used to great defense, and good shooting squads that can make winning look easy.

This season, Kansas is well down in the conference stats in many key categories,, despite their sparkling record.

  • 71.5  – fifth in points in the Big 12
  • 64.1 – ninth in points allowed
  • 43.2% – seventh in field goal percentage
  • 40.9% – field goal percentage defense
  • -1.24 – turnover margin
  • Stats from the official Big 12 site

Kansas does lead the conference in three-point shooting, and is in the top half of the conference on most rebounding categories, yet they struggle on the defensive end, and scoring.

On Saturday, the Jayhawks lost by five to Iowa State, though the game really didn’t feel that close. Time and time again, Kansas failed to back in transition defense, as the Cyclones ran the Jayhawks ragged for 86 points.

The young Kansas team was scrappy, and didn’t allow ISU to run away from them, but they often seemed out of control on offense, turning the ball over 15 times.

Frank Mason III led the team with 21 points. He also had 4 rebounds but only dished out 3 assists and made 3 turnovers. Perry Ellis finally played decently. Despite early first half foul trouble, Ellis recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Kansas got little contribution from the other big men. Jamari Traylor, Cliff Alexander, Landen Lucas, and Hunter Mickelson added a combined six points in 51 minutes of play, all by Alexander. They combined for just 12 rebounds, but four of those came from Mickelson in three minutes of play late in the game.

This Kansas Jayhawks basketball team can be very difficult to watch at times. There is little that is pretty to their play. Self needs to find a way to get these guys on the same page, and to start playing good defense. Their shooting must improve if they are going to remain as contenders for their 11th straight Big 12 regular season title.
