Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Red Raiders are 10-5, but have already lost two in conference play. Texas Tech has had a rough Big 12 schedule thus far, losing to 11th ranked Texas last weekend, and to 14th ranked West Virginia on Tuesday. Both losses, both at home, were by nine points.

Texas Tech only has one player in double figures in points, but nine average more than 11 minutes a game playing time. The key players for the Red Raiders are:

The Red Raiders are only averaging 12 assists a game, and shoot just 44% from the field.

One of the biggest struggles for the Jayhawks this season has been shooting. They are just 216th in the nation, hitting only 42.9% of their field goal attempts. This includes a relatively good night against Baylor, when they hit 47.1% of their shots.

Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden Jr., in particular have had a bad year shooting the ball.

Perry Ellis

  • 41.8% from the field (59 for 141) – first 2 season: 52.4%
  • 26.3% for three-point range (5 for 19) – first two seasons: 50%
  • 71.4 from the free throw line 50 for 70) – first two seasons: 75.4%

Wayne Selden

  • 35.2% from the field (43 for 122) – first season: 43.7%
  • 35.8% for three point range (19 for 53) – first season: 32.8%
  • 61% for the free throw line (25 for 41) – first season: 62.9%

Selden has shown improvement shooting from behind the arc but it hasn’t made up for his drop in other areas. Now that other players like Frank Mason III and Kelly Oubre are stepping up, Ellis and Selden need to show some major improvement going forward.

KU NOTES

  • Brannen Greene has yet to miss from the free throw line. He is 17 for 17 this season.
  • No decision has been made yet on if DeVonte Graham will return for this game. He is has missed seven games with an injured toe.
  • KU received some great news on Thursday when five-star recruit Carlton Bragg announced he would attend Kansas next season.
  • Jamari Traylor had a good game against Baylor. He had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. He also fouled out.

Winning at Baylor was a great way to start off the conference season, and the Jayhawks showed poise by edging out a good team on a hostile floor. Kansas must continue to develop their young players, and they must win games they should, especially at home.

It looks like the Big 12 is as well rounded of a conference as any fan could hope for this season, with six teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 21 this week. The Kansas Jayhawks need a good effort and performance every night to retain their hold on the conference championship.
