Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Baylor Bears

Baylor dropped the conference opener at Oklahoma last weekend 73-63. Their only other loss was against Illinois in late November. They have wins over South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Memphis.

The Bears have a number of players making major contributions this season. They have several players really filling the stat sheets.

Baylor could be a team that gives the Jayhawks some problems, especially in Waco. The Bears are 14th in the nation in rebounding, averaging 41.1 an outing. Kansas will need to keep Baylor off the offensive boards because the Bears average 15.6 offensive rebounds a game.

For the Jayhawks, two players seem to be emerging. Frank Mason is becoming this team’s leader, while Kelly Oubre continues to develop in leaps and bounds. Both have been really stepping up their games over the past four outings.

Frank Mason III

  • 16.5 points
  • 5.8 assists
  • 2.3 steals
  • 4.0 rebounds

Kelly Oubre, Jr.

  • 16 points
  • 8.5 rebounds
  • 1.5 steals

Both Mason and Oubre are both making an impact now for the Kansas Jayhawks. If these two can continue with these trends, it should allow Wayne Selden and Perry Ellis to shine as secondary pieces, a role in which both seem more comfortable.

If Cliff Alexander can continue to mature as a player, this team suddenly looks much more dangerous than they did just a few weeks ago.

Against UNLV, it was the first time all season Kansas displayed the style of basketball Bill Self teams are accustomed to playing. They hustled all over the court. They played intense, inspired defense, and they created fast break offense off that defense.

The Jayhawks were fun to watch Sunday against the Rebels, and Mason and Oubre are both key for Kansas to continue to perform on that level.

It will be interesting to see if Kansas can match that intensity, focus, and hustle on the road in the Big 12. Baylor will not be an easy opponent, so it will be a terrific test to the Jayhawks’ maturation as a team.
