GAME NOTES VERSUS UNLV REBELS

UNLV is 9-4 but they have faced some stiff competition. According to ESPN, the Rebels have played the 20th hardest schedule this season. They have losses against Stanford, Arizona State, Utah, and Wyoming, but they beat Temple back in November.

More from KC Kingdom

Nearly half of UNLV’s points this season have been scored by two players. Rashad Vaughn (17.9) and Christian Wood (15.7) have combined to score 419 of the Rebels 896 points this season.

The Rebels are also ranked 45th in the country in rebounding, averaging 38.9 caroms a contest. Wood nearly averages a double-double as he pulls in 9.8 rebounds to go with his nearly 16 points a game.

Kansas still has just two players averaging in double digits for points – Perry Ellis (12.8) and Frank Mason (11.9). Some help has been forthcoming on the offensive end of late though, for the Jayhawks.

Kelly Oubre started off slowly, and did not contribute much early in the season, but has come on of late. He is averaging just 6.9 points a game on the season, but is averaging 15.3 points over his last four outings, including scoring 20 or more points in two of his last three games.

Oubre also has been a force on the boards, averaging eight a game over his last three. If the freshman can continue his growth and development, there is a huge void with this team he could fill.

This roster seems filled with role players, with only Mason showing signs of being a leader. Oubre cold really pick up some of the slack here as Ellis and sophomore guard Wayne Selden both are struggling to show consistent improvements over last season’s play.

The Jayhawks are ranked 13th in Associated Press poll, and 14th in the Coaches poll. They are still ranked second in the CBS Sports RPI behind Kentucky, despite the loss to Temple before the holidays. The Jayhawks have also played the second stiffest schedule in the nation thus far, behind only Long Beach State.

Kansas needs to win this game comfortably and go into Big 12 play with some positive momentum. The emergence of Oubre is just in time help significantly in the conference. Now, if Oubre’s fellow freshman, Cliff Alexander, can get it going, the Jayhawks would be in terrific shape!
