Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Temple Owls

The Temple Owls are 7-4 so far this season, but two of those losses came at the hands of two top ten teams. The Owls lost to number four Duke and number seven Villanova. They have also dropped games to UNLV and Saint Joseph’s, but they are undefeated at home.

The Owls have just added two players at the end of the semester. Jesse Morgan and Devin Coleman combined to score 25 points in their first game of eligibility. Morgan is a transfer from UMass, and Coleman by way of Clemson.

Quenton DeCosey averages 14.8 points a game, and Will Cummings adds 14.5 an outing. Jaylen Bond leads Temple with 6.2 rebounds a contest.

The Owls should be an even better team with the additions of Morgan and Coleman. Maybe they can help one of the wort shooting teams in the country. Temple only hits 36.9% of their field goal attempts, which is ranked 339th in the country, out of 351 schools. They hit just 29.5% of their three-pointers.

Perry Ellis averages 13.3 points a game, and Frank Mason is the only other Jayhawk in double digits with 10.9 an outing. Ellis also pulls in 6.7 rebounds, and Mason dishes out 4.1 assists. Both numbers are tops on the team. (All stats provided from the ESPN team pages.)

Ellis struggled mightily against Lafayette, scoring just four, with three rebounds in 14 minutes. That’s all right, Jayhawk fans. Kelly Oubre just might have had his coming out game. The freshman has struggled most of the season, but recorded his first career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds against the Leopards. He nailed four shots from behind the arc in seven attempts.

The Kansas Jayhawks have really good depth (outside of point guard) , and Head Coach Bill Self has the luxury of playing the hot hand. Brannen Greene, who was the star against Georgetown, and who hit four big free throws against Utah down the stretch, played very little because he missed a weights session. Oubre was able to step into the breach.

Ellis played poorly but little used Hunter Mickelson stepped up and produced eight points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots in the win.

It wouldn’t be surprising if this isn’t a reoccurring theme for the Kansas Jayhawks this season. There is a lot of talent on this team, and they all can’t play significant minutes every game. If someone isn’t producing, Self has options on his bench who may.

They will need their depth for this tough road match-up against the Temple Owls. Temple  just added more talent to their rotation, and no one should expect an easy game.

This will be Kansas’ last game for a week, as Self is giving his charges some time off for the holidays.
