Game Notes Versus The Tennessee Volunteers

In their first round game of the Orlando Classic, the Vols recovered from a halftime deficit to beat Santa Clara, 64-57. Armani Moore and Josh Richardson each put up 18 in the win for Tennessee. Jabari McGhee added eight points, and pulled in nine rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench.

Richardson leads the Vols in scoring with 18 points a game. Moore is the only other player to average in double digits at 12.3 points an outing, and he also leads the team with seven rebounds a contest.

The Jayhawks won their second straight game, basically on the strength of a very good first half against Rhode Island in the preliminary round of the Orlando Classic. Kansas led 43-25 at half, but was outscored by two in the second half.

Perry Ellis scored 17 for the second consecutive game, despite being in foul trouble. Wayne Selden, Jr knocked down ten after going scoreless earlier in the week against Rider. He played 37 minutes, and added seven rebounds to his stat sheet.

Frank Mason tallied 12 points, and added 5 assists. More imprtantly, he didn’t have a turnover in 30 minutes.

Ellis is the only Jayhawk to average in double figures with 12.8 points so far this season. Frank Mason (9.5) and Cliff Alexander (9.0) are just under that mark through the first four games. Alexander leads the team with six boards an outing.

Kansas needs to play well the whole game, and eliminate the inconsistencies. They seem to still be looking for their team identity. Much like last year’s edition, this team doesn’t look to be a group that can shut down opponents defensively, and they don’t look to have the firepower to be a dominant offensive unit. Not yet anyway.

There is still plenty of time for the Jayhawks to work things out but they do have a tough schedule ahead. First, they need to get by the Vols to advance to the Orlando Championship game on Sunday.
