PREGAME NOTES

The Rhode Island Rams are undefeated at 3-0 this season. In there last outing, the beat the number 21-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, 66-62, in overtime. The Rams have three young, talented players who average in double digits in scoring – sophomore guard E.C. Matthews (16.3), sophomore forward Hassan Martin (15.7), and freshman guard Jared Terrell (11.7). They average 75 points an outing.

The Rams are also the 17th best rebounding team in the nation thus far with 45 a game, led by Martin (9.3), and Gilvydas Biruta (8.7).

Kansas has just one player in double figures in points so far – junior forward Perry Ellis is scoring 11.3 points per page. From there the Jayhawks are pretty balanced with six players averaging between six and nine points. This is big reason Kansas is only scoring 65.3 points a game.

The Jayhawks have still not found their comfort zone as an offensive team yet. They scored 87 points against an inferior Rider club but it wasn’t very encouraging.

One puzzling player is Wayne Selden, Jr. The sophomore guard didn’t score a point in 28 minutes, but he did dish out 9 assists with just one turnover, as he spelled Frank Mason at point guard. He was 0-4 from the field, and only pulled down 2 rebounds.

While his assists were nice, Selden has to be able to score for this team to be consistently successful. So far this season, Selden is just six for 24 from the field, and one for eight from behind the three-point line.

He can contribute in many areas, but the Jayhawks still need to him to score in double figures to be a good offensive team. (all stats from the ESPN team pages)

Kansas needs to find themselves over the next few games. Rhode Island won’t be an easy game, and if they win, they will play the winner of the Tennessee/Santa Clara game on Friday. The hope is Kansas can meet Michigan State in the final of the Orlando Classic on Sunday.

The Jayhawks are going to have to develop a positive team identity over the next few games if they want to take the next step toward another Big 12 Conference regular season championship. The talent is there in abundance. Now it is just coming together, and playing the kind of basketball Bill Self loves.
