Offense on Third Down

2 of 14. That was the Kansas City Chiefs conversions on third down in the game against Oakland. In case you didn’t know, that’s pretty bad.

The Chiefs have typically looked pretty good on third down this season, but this game was a disaster in a lot of ways. A few of the third downs were ridiculously far away due to negative yardage the play before, which only made things more difficult. Obviously in those long yardage situations, the Raiders defense knew Smith was going to throw the ball, and well… We all know how that typically works for the Chiefs.

There’s really not much else to say on this matter, as it’s pretty self explanatory. Again, this is an area where Kansas City usually excels, but this week everything seemed to be off for this team.

If the Kansas City Chiefs hope to bounce back next Sunday night against the Denver Broncos, they need to be able to convert third downs. Keeping Peyton Manning off the field will be extremely vital in winning the game. Remember that 10 minute long drive the Chiefs had in Denver in week 2? That was all about making third downs and keeping the clock running and keeping the Denver offense on the sideline.
