Looking Around the Kingdom, Kansas City Chiefs continued their 5-game winning streak by defeating the defending Super Bowl Champs Seattle Seahawks 24-20 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

It was a throwback game in cold-weather conditions in which both teams ran for more yards than they passed. Jamaal Charles led the way for Kansas City with 159 yards rushing and 2 TDs, on 20 attempts for a sparkling 8.0 yards per carry.

The Chiefs really should have dominated the Seahawks, except they turned the ball over twice in their own territory. The two uncharacteristic turnovers from Kansas City led to 10 Seattle points.

Royals players Jeremy Guthrie, Alcides Escobar, and Salvador Perez continue their exhibition tour of Japan with a major-league all-star squad.

On Saturday, the Kansas Jayhawks put a scare into the no. 4 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs falling 34-30 the week after TCU stuffed K-State 41-20. The close game against a top 5 team helps make a case for interim coach Clint Bowen to get the permanent job.

Meanwhile, K-State’s Tyler Lockett piled up nominations for both the Campbell Award (commonly called the Academic Heisman) and the CLASS award—given to senior football players in the FBS division.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Arrowhead Addict – Video of TE Travis Kelce‘s block on Seahawks S Earl Thomas:

"Perhaps one of the more overlooked moments in this heavyweight fight was when Chiefs TE Travis Kelce absolutely decleated Seattle safety Earl Thomas, springing RB Jamaal Charles for roughly an extra 18 yards."

Arrowhead Pride – Thoughts on KC’s win over defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks:

"This game was an exchange of long, will-enforcing drives from each offense, with Seattle gaining 204 ground yards on 37 carries (5.5 YPC) and 14 rushing first downs of their own. Twenty-eight combined rushing first downs has to be one of the highest single-game totals in recent NFL history and it gave the game a soccer-like feel in that every score would have a massive impact and that none of them would come quickly."

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Kings of Kauffman – Jeremy Guthrie reconnects with family in Japan

"For Jeremy Guthrie, this journey to Japan had an added perk – it allowed him to connect with a side of his family that had been out of touch for over forty years. There had been attempts to mail one another, but nothing came of them and, thirty years ago, both sides just gave up. However, for Guthrie, once he realized he was heading to Japan, it was a chance to attempt to reconnect."

Fangraphs.com – What’s behind the drop in runs across Major League Baseball?

This article contained some interesting comments about the Royals by opposing general managers:

"Neal Huntington, Pittsburgh Pirates: “Players in their mid 30s are players in their mid 30s. Very rarely do they suddenly get better, as happened with some in the 1990s and 2000s. Depth is important. You look at what Kansas City and Baltimore have done, having deep and talented rosters. They can rest players and not have a huge drop off. Youth and depth are absolutely crucial to roster building as we go forward.”Farhan Zaidi, Los Angeles Dodgers: “Just when you think you’ve identified a trend, it seems like things go the other way. It’s really just about building the most-balanced team. It’s not like we’re going to think to ourselves, ‘This team had success with guys who steal a lot of bases, so let’s go that way.’ We learn every season there’s more than one way to skin a cat. I don’t think we’re going to be overly dogmatic in our approach.”"

Royals ReviewBaseball America named top 10 prospects in Royals system for 2015:

"Baseball America notes that the run to the World Series the Royals saw this year couldn’t have been accomplished without the “second wave” of prospects. They note Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi as the pieces to the James Shields/Wade Davis trade, Yordano Ventura, and Christian Colon as all playing a role in their 2014 success. Also mentioned is the stumbling some of the “second wave” members in Bubba Starling, Brett Eibner, and the trade of Jason Adam for bench bat Josh Willingham."

KANSAS STATE WILDCATS

K-State Sports – Tyler Lockett named finalist for CLASS award

"Lockett’s designation comes on the heels of another major off-the-field honor as he was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, generally referred to as the “Academic Heisman,” last week. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility."

KANSAS JAYHAWKS

KUSports.com – Clint Bowen Deserves to get the permanent head football coach job:

"Although it’s common for teams to play better when an assistant coach is promoted to interim head coach, nothing is typical about the way Clint Bowen has transformed a depleted roster into a high-flying, hard-hitting ball of focused fire."
