Andy Reid Needs To Get Back To The Basics

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs return to the field this week in San Diego and the formula that got them on a two game winning streak needs to be Andy Reid‘s focus. I praised Coach for his play calling and game planning for three weeks and in week 5 against the 49ers, he did everything opposite.

Just to beat a dead horse for a second, the Chiefs had 2-and-1 twice and rather than run for that one yard -running the ball is the strength of the offense- Coach Reid tried to get cute and throw the ball which eventually lead to punts.

My theory on the deal is that Alex Smith wanted that win so bad against his former team that rather than stick to the script that got them two straight victories, Andy Reid tried to put the ball in Alex Smith’s hands and let him get his victory.

That might not be true but from an outside perspective that seemed to be the case.

How else do you explain Jamaal Charles only touching the ball 4 times in the first half? Or Knile Davis‘ two carries for just 6 yards on the whole day? I mean, you’re going to tell me that you have a big back who can easily churn out big plays and you won’t give him the ball at least once for an attempt at a first down?

This all brings me to my point, get back to the basics!

The Chiefs rattled off two straight wins because they were using the running game to set their offense up. It’s no secret that the Chiefs strength on offense is their two running backs and when they get going, everything else opens up.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

This week, they’re taking on the red hot Chargers and the only way they’re going to beat them is by ball control offense and keeping Philip Rivers off the field, much like what they did against the Broncos week two.

The Chargers are 5-1 and Philip Rivers is on a terror, setting an NFL record with five straight games with a passer rating of at least 120. He also has 15 touchdowns to just two interceptions on the season already making him an early favorite for the NFL’s MVP.

If Kansas City wants to get this win -Andy Reid is 13-2 all time coming off the bye week- then they must get back to playing with their strengths. Winning this game changes the complexion of the Chiefs season because they’re actually entering an easier portion of their schedule.

After the Chargers, the Chiefs will host the St. Louis Rams (1-5), the New York Jets (1-5), and the Buffalo Bills (3-3) before hosting the Super Bowl Champs, the Seattle Seahawks. They’re in a prime position to quickly turn things around but the only way that will happen is if Andy Reid gets back to calling games the way he did the first couple of weeks.

So coach Reid, please get back to the basics.
