The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to go with rookie place kicker Cairo Santos over veteran Ryan Succop. The Chiefs cut Succop on Saturday. Nico Johnson was also among the cuts.

According to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, via twitter, Succop is no longer a Chief.

ESPN’s Adam Teicher confirmed.

This decision may have come down to money. The Kansas City Chiefs save $1,776,250 million in cutting Ryan Succop, according to Spotrac.com.

Succop, who was Mr. Irreverent in the 2009 draft, just never seem to have a huge leg, and he missed a key 41-yard field goal last season against the San Diego Chargers.

Cairo Santos is an undrafted free agent from Tulane. Leigh Oleszczak mentioned several weeks ago that this a positional battle to keep an eye on.

The Chiefs also cut inside linebacker Nico Johnson, Kansas City’s 4th round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson just never seemed to take the necessary step forward in his development. The Chiefs save $372,500 by cutting him.

Other cuts for the Kansas City Chiefs include, from kcchiefs.com: safeties Jonathon Amaya and Malcolm Bronson, fullback Jordan Campbell, defensive linemen Dominque Hamilton, Kyle Love, and Kona Schwenke, wide receivers Mark Harrison and Fred Williams, offensive linemen Ricky Henry and J’Marcus Webb, linebackers Devan Walker and Alonzo Highsmith, cornerback Justin Rogers, and running back Charcandrick West.
