Alex Gordon played the hero hitting a 2-run shot to give the Kansas City Royals a walkoff 2-1 win over in the bottom of the 9th over the Twins at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals looked poised to lose their 3rd straight game, trailing 1-0 through 8 innings after managing only 3 hits, 1 walk and 2 hit batsmen. Alcides Escobar opened the 9th with a bloop single to right, followed by Gordon’s bomb over the right centerfield wall.

The win puts Kansas City 15 games over .500 at 73-58. Detroit is leading 5-2 over the Yankees, so the victory looks like it will allow them to retain their 1.5 game lead in the A.L. Central.

On the Mound

The unfortunate Danny Duffy went 6.2 innings, allowing only 4 hits, 2 walks, and 1 earned run with 4 strikeouts. However, Duffy left the game trailing 1-0 in the 7th.

Kelvin Herrera finished off the 7th and pitched the 8th allowing 1 hit in a scoreless inning. Overall, Herrera went 1.1 innings, allowing 1 hit with 2 strikeouts.

Wade Davis entered in the 9th and pitched yet another clean inning in his fabulous season (0.78 ERA). Davis earned the win (7-2) after Gordon’s game-winner in the 9th.

At the Plate

Kansas City did not score a run until Alex Gordon’s 2-run walkoff home run (16) that won the game for Kansas City.

This and That

Ricky Nolasco went 7 or more innings for only the 4th time this season Wednesday night against the Royals.

Billy Butler got hit by a pitch twice—once to lead off the 2nd and the 2nd time leading off the 7th—but could not score either time.

The Royals have hit a home run in 6 consecutive games.
