Justin Houston is one of the best linebackers in the NFL at the moment. That doesn’t always bring good news though, as Jason La Canfora said there’s “not a chance” that a deal will get done this season.
This might seem bad, but Terez Paylor doesn’t see any room for KC Chiefs fans to panic.
Paylor makes a good point. Houston is going into the final year of his contract and after that, the Chiefs have the ability to slap that franchise tag on him. The only problem with that is if the Chiefs are still negotiating with quarterback Alex Smith. They can’t place tags on both guys, so hopefully things get patched up with at least one of them by that point (if not both).
Here is what La Canfora had to say via CBS Sports.
The market for pass rushers is always intense and with players like Robert Quinn also possibly getting new deals this year, the price only stands to go up if the production is there. Young pass rushers Aldon Smith and Von Miller are also eligible for extensions, but have off-field concerns that could mitigate receiving a new deal in the short term.
Kansas City absolutely cannot afford to let Houston go. He’s one of the best pass rushers in the league and is only on the rise right now. His best years are ahead of him and they have to be with the Chiefs. Whatever they need to do to get this deal done, DO IT.
