Kansas City Chiefs All Pro safety, Eric Berry has been dealing with some nagging injuries for what seems like the entire training camp. He did not participate in last weeks preseason opener (no big deal) but has still been practicing.

Berry gave every Chiefs fan a big scare when he was carted off the field two weeks ago for what was later diagnosed as a heel injury. Well today, Berry left the field early again for the same injury.

We are all aware of how important Eric Berry is to the Chiefs defense and any season ending injury would be a devastating blow to an already very thin unit. Well, breathe a sigh of relief, as Randy Covitz was right about the heel flaring up.

Turns out, Berry is dealing with tendinitis in his heel, an inflammation, irritation, and swelling of a tendon.

When I was a junior in high school, I had tendinitis in my right elbow and after several different braces, wraps, and ice packs the swelling and pain went down significantly. I was able to play through it as an offensive lineman but having it in your heel as a defensive back has got to be entirely different.

Covitz brings up a good point about Brandon Flowers in 2012 and his nagging heel issues. Berry is one of the most versatile defensive backs in the NFL and full range of his feet is crucial to his game. If he has to deal with this tendinitis problem through out the year it could slow him down significantly.

The good news is, there is still plenty of time for this issue to heal if Berry gets his rest. I don’t think it would matter much if he didn’t play in one game of this years preseason, as he needs to keep rehabilitating the tendon.

This isn’t an injury that’s too concerning, so long as Berry can get it healthy before week one of the regular season.
