According to Jayson Stark of ESPN, Chris Denorfia is one of several right-handed hitting right fielders the Royals are looking at to bolster their weak offense.
Quite frankly, the players the Royals already have on their roster are at least as good as Denorfia. The Padre is right-handed so if the Royals wanted to trade Nori Aoki straight up, that would be fine, but Denorfia isn’t much of an upgrade otherwise.
The 34-year old is having a tough season. His slash line so far in 2014 is brutal – .238/.292/.319/.612. His Wins Above Replacement is .1. The Royals already have a better player than that in Jarrod Dyson.
The Royals are power deficient and Denorfia has one home run and 15 RBI this year. He set his career highs in home runs with 10 last season, and RBI with 47. Hardly the difference maker Kansas City needs.
Jarrod Dyson’s slash is much better, but still not impressive – .283/.341/.343/.684. He only has 1 homer and just 13 RBI, but he has 19 stolen bases, and a WAR of 2.5.
It is not debatable – the Royals need a major upgrade in right field. Dyson is a fantastic fourth outfielder but surely the Royals can find someone more helpful to the their needs than Denorfia.
The Royals have interest in Marlon Byrd. Earlier in the week, it didn’t seem like he was the best candidate. It is looking more and more like Byrd might just be the best right-handed right fielder available.
The Kansas City Royals are just two games back of the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild card spot. A player like Byrd just may make the difference. It is highly doubtful Chris Denorfia would make any difference.
