According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Royals are on of four teams very interested in Bastardo. Central rival Detroit Tigers, as well as Toronto and Pittsburgh have also been keeping an eye on the reliever.
Antonio Bastardo is a 28-year old, hard throwing lefty with good career strikeout numbers (11.1 per 9 Innings) but has just an average ERA (3.58) and WHIP (1.197). In 2014, his ERA is 3.27 and his WHIP 1.114.
This is the kind of move Dayton Moore and the Glass family like to use to try to fool their fan base into believing they are really trying to do something. Bastardo is a decent arm, but the Royals will try to convince us that he is the missing piece to this team.
Mr. Moore – THIS TEAM NEEDS A BAT. In case you haven’t noticed, your team struggles to score runs – regularly.
Bastardo is also the third Phillie the Royals have been tied too in trade rumors. A.J. Burnett does not have the Royals on his no-trade list, and Marlon Byrd might be able to provide some pop for the Royals.
The Royals are 50-50, third in the AL Central, 7 behind the Tigers, but only 2.5 back in the wild card race. The math doesn’t add up that the Royals are a contender, but they are certainly not out of it yet.
Five teams are within 2.5 games of the final wild card spot, so a couple of big moves on the Royals part may be enough to get them in to the post season for the first time since 1985.
Unfortunately, acquiring Antonio Bastardo before the MLB Trade Deadline would not be a big move.
